So, desert dwellers ... just how common is lightning with a dust storm? Is it one of those things where, sometimes it happens/sometimes it doesn't? Or is it more like thunder snow up here: rare to the point of assuming that the boom came from something other than the storm.

well here it isn't common. usually dust storms come early in the evening when it's still daylight and monsoon storms, if they come, come a little later with thunder.
