Looks great dude, get some air shocks in there and you'll be happening.

And to all the doubters the 91 new yorker can tow 2 dirtbikes and a ATV in our 5x8 utility trailer. (Or was it a 5x10...)

Hitch/mount, airshocks, and tranny cooler was all that was needed.

1991 New Yorker:
Curb weight 3348
Length: 193.6 in.
Width: 68.9 in.
Wheel Base: 104.5 in.
Horsepower: 147 hp
Torque: 183 ft-lbs.
FWD

2010 Camaro:
Curb Weight: 3780 lbs.
Length: 190.4 in.
Width: 75.5 in.
Wheel Base: 112.3 in.
Horsepower: 304 hp (V6)
Torque: 273 ft-lbs. (V6)
RWD

The Camaro is a far superior tow vehicle -- longer and wider wheelbase, less overhang, RWD, better tires, and heavier (plus more power, for those who are too impatient to tow safely). It should be able to safely tow the 1991 New Yorker AND the trailerload of toys at the same time.

I'd guess the Camaro's safe towing capacity (assuming that GM would put in the R&D to rate it to its full safe capacity, which they won't, since they have no reason to) would probably be around 5,000 pounds and would usually be limited by tongue weight, which I bet it can't reasonably handle a huge amount of.

Yeah I was just pointing out that if my pos dailydriver can do it, than the camaro should do it, if not better. =p

I wasn't arguing with you, though sometimes I fail to set a friendly tone...I was confirming your point with numbers. The Camaro should tow really well.

In that comparison, I forgot to mention brakes too. I'm sure the Camaro's brakes are lightyears ahead of the Park Avenue's.

Like I said, they have no reason to spend money on the R&D required to rate the car for its actual safe towing capacity.

Even de-rated, I would not exceed the rating; that could expose you to liability in the event of a crash, even if the crash had nothing to do with you towing beyond the car's rating.

I personally would not trust the average hitch installer to cut up my diffuser. I might have trusted this manufacturer to do it but not everyone will have that luxury.

It is a Class I. [1-1/4" receiver 2000lbs max tow wt 200lbs max tongue wt]
It is also clearly marked "Do not exceed tow vehicle ratings."

We know from the owners manual that those values are 1000lbs max tow wt and 100lbs max tongue wt. That's also what my Gen4 was rated at as I recall.
From reading other threads I surmise that these low values are the result of no actual R&D time/money having been spent to determine the 'true values.'
In any case, it is enough for my bike rack.

K0jdd, that looks like a nice job on the hitch. With the open trailer and 2 high performance bikes I would be above the the 1000 lb trailer towing recommended weight. The tongue weight would need to be checked out and I would need to drop the thought of trailering 2 nice bikes.

Worse than that is.........the 2SS/RS LS3 has become my pride and joy. I have a new love in it and I seriously don't think I could trailer anything. I need your report!!! I still have the enclosed trailer and nice GMC extended cab truck to help me get to Eureka Springs!! The Camaro would be missed on those twisties.

What are you going to tow and what is the tongue and total weight.

Only in America do people think they need an F-350 to two a tiny little load. The problem is, for a long time we've had so much that we never felt the need to match the execution with our needs. That's why cars in America won't have nearly the tow-rating their counterparts abroad do. The manufacturers know no one will use the product to tow but instead will get the biggest truck they possibly can, so they have no incentive to produce meaningful tow ratings. The only thing that concerns me then is the liability issue. Sure it physically can, but if it legally "can't", then liability could come back to bite you hard.

Fortunately, I was looking at the new Equinox to replace our Taurus wagon in a few years (shame there are so few good wagons out there, much better than an SUV or CUV) and V6 models can be equipped with a tow package from the factory rated to 5,200 lbs. That's more than enough to tow a tent-trailer or a couple wave-runners. (Clue I'm not a typical overkilling American - I'd prefer to camp in at most a small tent trailer rather than an RV.)

Camaro Lives On's point stands, though; your cats and mufflers don't encounter parking blocks or "angle of attack" issues as your car transitions from flat to hill. Well, maybe the mufflers...

Looks like I have to recalibrate my eyes, then...I thought I was looking at a 2" receiver and fat tubes. D'oh!

Additionally, though, in Europe the drivers are trained better (and IIRC they are required to be certified specifically for towing).

That, and possibly if you're concerned about the warranty. They could blame transmission failures on exceeding the rated towing capacity.

Ok since you necro's rezed this thread then make yourself useful and find out if anyone has a trailer hitch kit for the 5th Gen Automatic Camaro yet.

There is that one picture of a CTF pulling a trailer. I know you can buy the kits for Vette so.
