MGW. Anyone who recommends a Hurst either a) drives like a sissy or b) has never tried the MGW.

I wish I knew how the MGW compares to the Barton.. I am generally happy with the Barton but if the MGW is that much better I would consider. I can see the Barton still notchy at times but much improvement over stock.

Anyone have experience with both?

MGW is the consensus, and they're probably right...

But I sooo love my HURST.

I test drove a Hurst equipped Camaro SS before I bought my 1LE. I can tell you, the Hurst is super notchy. The ZL1/1LE shifter is the same throw reduction (22%) but that shifter is a huge improvement over Hurst. The MGW is a fairly big improvement over the 1LE/ZL1 shifter and its another 11% throw reduction.

Best part of the MGW is the spring assist from 2-3 and then down shifting from 5-4. Super smooth shifter too

Honestly I don't blame you. If I didn't get my MGW as a trade I wouldn't have switched. Detailed a guys camaro ss in trade for the shifter. (he went from a manual obviously to a 4L80 or 4L60 whatever)

Been following this thread. There are three MGW shifters on there sight and the descriptions seem the same. Anyone know what the difference is?

I also don’t see a weighted knob option, just the black or white option.

Interesting. Is the install as much of a PITA as it looks. Looks a little daunting for just a shifter.

They are just different styles depending on what you like. I went with the flat but that just my preference. As for the weighted shift knob they do not offer that option. The one I got is almost a pound. I can share the link if interested. Just FYI the thread size is a 3/8-16.

Not to bad. Took me about an hour. With that being said the two retainer clips on either side of the factory shifter is a pita to get out and back in. Don’t let that change your mind though.

No experience with a Barton, but increased notchiness is a common trade-off when you shorten up the shift throws. Though some shifters seem to reach a better compromise than others. Keep in mind also that some people can tolerate more notchiness than others. Or even prefer it.

FWIW, I've got an MGW in my GT, so that'd be my recommendation as well. Though since I personally hate notchiness, I actually fabbed up an extension piece to reduce notchiness without sacrificing the greater precision over the OEM pieces.

A weighted shift knob helps the shift lever keep moving once you've got the shift motion started (it's an inertia thing), and I guess you could say it sort of absorbs some of the notchiness as it helps your right arm power through it. I'm pretty sure that it's possible to overdo this 'weighting' thing, though.

When you say preference is just the look? Or do they perform differently?

Yes, please share the link for the weighted knob.
