now out of curiosity would a CAI fix this or would you still need to add a stand alone sensor? This is a part of the engine i don't understand alot about

I was curious how this might work in conjunction with a CAI. Any thoughts?

All of the CAI kits that I've seen look like they simply reuse the stock MAF/IAT sensor and keep them located in basically the same place as the stock location... so going by that... it would appear to me that adding a stand along IAT sensor would still be beneficial.

I wonder if one could put a mount in the top of a cone filter (at least, in one with a rubber end cap) and put the sensor there. You'd just have to run the wiring below the intake so its out of view.

I did some testing a few weeks ago... the stock snorkel actually does a pretty good job of getting air from the front of the car... The intake temps were a couple of degrees warmer and they tended to climb a bit faster when the stock snorkel was removed.... I was surprised it made a measurable difference...

Scrming - thanks for the great info.

My question is by having the IAT read low temps (like winter time) and high temps (summer) will these negatively affect the engine's performance over long periods of time?

Thanks.

Really shouldn't...

One thing I need to double check is my gas mileage... cooler temps means the computer in theory adds more fuel... but not knowing the details on how this ECU works it's only a wild guess until i really check my MPG... but seems my foot has been pretty heavy lately... LOL

Scrming-quick question , maybe even a stupid question so sorry for asking. If you someone were to install a CAI(in my case Air raids) would doing this relatively cheap mod have any additional benefit. I ask becuase I see you have the stock air box in the pics. I am going to guess no as the whole point of the CAI is to lessen the heat from the car anyway.

Thanks

from the pictures I've seen you retain the stock MAF/IAT sensor and it pretty much stays in the stock location. Also part of the issue is the fact the stock IAT sensor is located INSIDE the stock MAF sensor...

So yes this mod could definitely enhance your CAI! And as you mentioned it's relatively cheap!

This has the same effect that the powerwire I bought for my Ram does. It's essentially a resistor that you plugin to the IAT that tells the sensor it's about 20* cooler than what the IAT is pulling.

Since my Ram isn't my dd anymore I'll have to go out and see if it'll fit on my car.

To a degree yes... except instead the resistor is going to add linear resistance where as the IAT sensors (thermosister) are not linear... I'm not an electrical engineer but that's my understanding at least... When my engine bay does get hot form sitting idling for a long period and the intake is actually taking in hot air the relocated IAT will read HOT like it is supposed to... Guess my feeling is the relocated IAT sensor ($12) is a bit more accurate reading of what the air temp is than just subtracting a set amount by using a resistor... Again, not an engineer... just my wild guess opinion... LOL

Ok... this part of my air intake experiment actually showed some promise on the dyno!

My driving observation has been the car feels more peppy, especially after the car has been driven and then parked for a while (Heat Soak!).

Here is the dyno sheet from today. You can see the nice gain in the low end torque. So from a stop, you can see that 1st gear would see a nice gain up to just before 5500 RPM... When the car shifts the RPMS drop down to 4400 RPM so the other gears see some gains too! So for $30 (or less) I think this experiment gets a thumbs up!

2.0 60ft and a 97mph trap speed? something is going terribly wrong after the 60ft my friend. That's a mid 13 second 60ft.
