Yes, these needed to be recalled, Chrysler knew that and did it, like they always do, there were not even any complaints to the NHTSA on these issues and CHrysler went ahead and recalled them because there are actually, and not inflated, issues. And before anyone says they just did this to prove they will, I seriously doubt it takes more than 1 or 2 days to put a recall in place and have a fix already waiting. Believe Ford and GM both have done this type of recall lately (not for the same issue of course, but got the problems fixed as soon as they found out about them).

Good memory, but that wasn't NHTSA. It was NBC and their Dateline show that rigged the fuel tanks with model rocket engines so the would ignite on impact. I still remember and have a VHS video of GM's top lawyer Harry Pierce absolutely slaying NBC in a press conference in a full on, Perry Mason style prosecution. It was priceless...
