gears will whine... longtubes will be loud... rockers will tick... its part of the modification process.

Not when cut (and set-up) properly. Turned out the whine was due to the Motive's cut on the gears. TSB's were issued by Ford for this problem.

Do a Google search on "Motive" "Ford" and "whine". Tons of complaints.

I am hoping this guy was wrong...but there were two guys at the table that I spoke to.

Honestly I am hoping they are just clueless....But the way he put it, I had to believe him.

Ive read the back story. ideally gears shouldnt whine, but sometimes they do. but there's a point where individual driveability requirements exceed that of a product. back when they started selling aftermarket rockers for LT1/4s everyone complained that once they were installed, they rattled like a sewing machine... and some people sent them back to the manufacturer.... others modified their personal driveability issues. lol

From what I know about the Mustang gears there are several factors.

First Ford gears, when they still made their own had a standard stack or length from the rear pinion. All installation setup numbers were taken from the face where the rear bearing would seat. Ideally you would use the Ford Rotunda setup tool which simulates bearing preload in the setup.

Most Mustang guys were spoiled from Fords uniformity with the gears. As anyone who sets up aftermarket gears knows that all the figures for setup are taken from the rear face of the pinion. Mustang guys for years were simply re using the pinion shim from the gear in the car. This would work when Ford made the gears but not when an outside vendors gear were used.

Most of the these guys were R&R guys and didn't really know how to properly set up gears. That is why they were so cheap. I know of guys around me who only would buy Ford Motorsport Gears because they could get away with re using the original shim.

I have been sponsored by Motive in the past. So I have a little inside info. What is really funny is that when I need a gear, I get one that has been returned by a so called "installer". Funny how I don't have a problem with the gears.

I have a good friend who is a tech at a Ford dealer. He called about a problem with a Motorsport Gears in an 05 Mustang. I told him it was a Motive set and had to be set up with the measuring tools. He was pisssed because it took him more time. But he was able to get the noise out once he set it up correctly.

Also the 3 link on a 05 and newer mustang and the torque arm on the F Body transfers a LOT more noise than the old 4 link deal in the Fox body.

I think of the vendors/dealers/etc at sema like car dealers. they know about as much as our car dealers did about the camaro being made....

they know whats out right now, but all they are there for is to sell you their product, not describe how its made or what products are behind closed doors

I will be at the show on Wed also, so if you think I shoudl talk to somebody else speak up and I will see what I can do.

I am willing to allow them to use my vehicle also over the winter...so we have some bargaining power here!!!

So who should I ask?
Go by Yukon. Ask for an engineer.

Please don't lump us all into one group. SEMA is many different groups under oneroof. Booths can have sales, marketing and engineering together. Ask if there is a tech person to answer your questions.

ADM has already said they were working with a vendor, and they should be available Q1 2010... If they are at SEMA, ask them.

very true. but, I take most things with a grain of salt unless its coming directly from the horses mouth....
as far as asking the tech person... thats what was done, and the person asking was told that there was nothing being made, while on the other hand, myself and a couple others who have talked to the engineers and techs at motive have said that they are almost ready for sale.

Well guys I am sorry that the guys at the counter for Motive are not up to speed. I asked my guy (the engineer) how come they didn't know what he was doing. Lets just say it was an interesting response.

So as of now the engineering is done and he should have gears in my hands to test in several months.

As stated elsewhere in this thread there are others who are developing gear sets also.

The cool thing is that they won't be crazy expensive like the first GTO and G8 Gears.

They won't be as cheap as a 9" or an 8.8".

I will update as I hear anything.

Thanks

Robin
