Excessive Oil consumption

I've noticed recently my 2013 Camaro SS has somehow been using/burning oil. I had to add 1 quarter of oil today after only about 700 miles between last top-up. I do have a catch can and I empty it every once in a while. The car has about 20k miles, so I'm a bit worried about it. Since I still have warranty left, I'm thinking of taking it to a dealer for them to investigate. Does anyone else have this issue? I've searched the forum, and I've found some V6 engines have had oil consumption issues.

I think you meant V8 engines, not V6, since you mentioned SS.

How often do you have to empty your catch can?

Valley Cover might be defective.

Thanks for your response...what I meant is that when I searched for oil consumption issues, I only found a thread that affected V6 engines. Does it happen often that Valley Covers leak or are defective?

Was there about a quart of oil in your catch can........or was it full?

Obvious things to look for: spots on floor, catch can full or smoke from leaks under the hood

There are no oil leaks under the car or anywhere under the hood, that I can tell. That much oil is definitely not going into a catch can-the amount is actually pretty low whenever I empty it. I did notice tail pipes do get black with soot, so I'm guessing the oil is maybe getting burned up somehow. I haven't seen any noticeable black smoke coming out of the exhaust while driving.

The valley cover problem is not thaaaat common "out there", but it seems to be a common enough of an occurrence on forums (where problems are reported).

In light of your situation, I'd do a compression test, and check the condition of your spark plugs for any other undesirable tell-tail signs, of something else more serious lurking.

IMHO, the valley cover problem is your best case scenario here.

So I found these two interesting threads:

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...lley+cover+oil

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...ghlight=excess

I'm a bit worried and I will definitely be visiting a Chevy dealer to see what they'll be able to come up with. I'm hoping they won't just tell me this is normal. I still have about 4 more months of factory warranty left, but I might need to look into purchasing extended warranty just to be safe. The car did have over 300 miles on the clock when I bought it, so it was definitely not broken in properly.

Oil consumption can and will vary dramatically from vehicle to vehicle. Most manufacturers will, Unfortunately, claim that using 1 qt every 1000 miles is completely acceptable.
If you claim to have an issue, they will have you track your oil consumption. If you're really using a qt every 700 miles you might have a chance at a warranty repair, that is if they can even find the cause.
Sometimes, it just happens.

Did you buy this car new? If so, how was it broken in?

I will definitely not let them fool me into believing that 1qt of oil is normal in 700, or 1000 miles. I will be making an appointment for next week. I did take the throttle body off and cleaned it. See photo below:

I also looked inside the intake and it looks fine - just oily residue and no pools of oil:
