Actually, I think a billion is about the norm these days for an all new vehicle. Can be even higher if its on a unique/heavily rejiggered platform. Cars that require tons of R&D also push the cost up too. I think the 1st gen Volt was in the 1.5 to 2 billion range, for example.

Conversely, if its a fairly simple re-skin of something else (or only relatively a small change from the previous generation), or has a couple basic powertrains the development can be reduced.

Cars are expensive to bring to market. They are the most complicated mass produced things in existence. To produce them you need a fairly large team of specialists working for years, a small fleet of (expensive) prototypes to work the bugs out with, and a bunch of complex tooling/dies to purchase to actually build the thing. It adds up.

On the other hand, the number of cars sold matters less than how many you were planning on selling & how much is made off each one.
I don’t think I have ever seen one on the road.. If I did I must have thought it was something else.

Its a great idea. But they brought back on top of a FWD car. Just not going to cut it.

Doesn't surprise me, while it was not bad to look at, it was just an all around dumb bloated sedan.

Look at it from the perspective of Escala being an S-Class / 7-Series / LS500 competitor and Continental being an Acura RLX competitor. The first group is low, but fairly consistent volume / demand. The second is losing market share rapidly to luxury SUV and crossover models.

So Cadillac won’t be shifting entirely to SUVs and crossovers. It’ll keep making cars, de Nysschen said, especially cars that can be world-beaters in terms of the driving experience. There’s a new small sedan coming down the pipeline, likely to compete with cars like the Mercedes CLA, BMW 2 Series, and Audi A3, which will be the only car in its segment to come with rear-wheel-drive as standard, and in top-spec trim “it will certainly lap the Nurburgring faster than anyone of our competitors in that category, if they care about that.”
JDN again confirms CT4 RWD compact Cadillac.

I’m sure it will lap the Ring just fine. Will it have a good interior and an entertainment system that people don’t loathe?

I think the CT4 is supposed to be a 'tweener' like the old CTS. Smaller than the current CTS but bigger than the ATS. The CT2 (if the go with even number names) would likely be a touch smaller than the ATS.

CT5 is supposed to straddle the compact-midsize segment. CT4 is looking to be something like a 2-series/CLA competitor.
