Any one know? Have they had a 2017 ZL1 do a top speed run yet??

John Hennessey did and the Manual 6-speed version of the ZL1 tops out at 173MPH according to him. Top of 5th gear at 6600 RPM.

It's odd chevy would gear it in such a way. The Nurburgring video has the ZL1 doing 181 MPH on the long straight, and spends nearly 20 seconds at 175-178 (Slight turn slows the pulling)...So what then? The manual car would just be banging repeatedly off the limiter at 173? Shifting into 6th makes the car slow down in stock form......

They more likely than not geared it like this to achieve a reasonable fuel economy number for the manual transmission.

This is also likely one of the big reasons they ran the 'Ring using the automatic. Keep in mind that back straight is also uphill 90% of the time.

I suspect the top speed of this car is in the high 190s, perhaps tickling 200. Some article somewhere referenced 200. I just don't have any proof (nor did they, if I remember right)

...But where would you use that?

I don't know...The only way that 190 or 200 is achievable is with 1) the auto or 2) more power to spin 6th.

And I know people that have done north of 173 on local high ways

What about half mile guys? 1 mile guys?? I think they should have thrown the Vette's 7 Speed in it. Screw the gas mileage.


And as far as Hennessey sucking, I agree Tommy. So why don't you tell us how fast your car goes?

Yes, manual would be out of the question. 6th is geared so steep, the car would need at least 850-900hp to make it do anything useful. The vehicle's true top speed would have to be reached in the A10 version.

I do remember reading somewhere that the 7-speed didn't fit in the car. Gotta remember that the Corvette uses a transaxle case for the transmissions, since it's mounted out back...

I suspect the 6 speed was a packaging issue vs the 7 speed and yes, the General has to consider CAFE standards in everything they build. GGT as well.

THAT SAID, how about the fact that ALL of the ZL1's competitors, whether they can run the 'Ring or not, can all do north of 190 MPH. Considering the M6 will probably be 40% of the market too. I mean 173 is cookin' but it's not THAT fast. With a little room, you can do 173. I'm sure guys in Houston do it all the time.

Didn't the manual 5th gen and the auto have the same top speed of 184. It's interesting that GM hasn't said anything about the top speed for the 6th gen ZL1.

If it really is what it tops out that is kinda sad... I hope this isn't the case. Honestly I probably wouldn't ever get up to 175, but wasn't it Hennessey that took a SS up to 200+ ? Anyone actually top one out yet?

All that Hennessy video does is show redline in 5th. Does not show what happens in 6th, still a mystery.
