Camshaft ideas
I've been searching for a new camshaft. There are several out there specifically for the ZL1, but I can't find one with an aggressive idle anywhere. Any suggestions?

This is with the stock NPP muffler. It is very loud, especially under WOT. I can only imagine with a Corsa or Borla muffler....

Brian tooley racing has some grinds for the ZL1. Cam selection and characteristics should be matched to your transmission type, A10 or Manual, and build goals.

Are you going to try the install yourself? This 6th Gen is a bear to do a cam install. All of my Mods were done by 21st Century Muscle Cars in Dallas. Most of the shops have a "custom grind", which is a little misleading. There are really only a couple of cam manufacturers that make them for everyone to private label. The specs on mine are 227/244 .633/.631 115 LSA +5. I can't remember is it was ground by Brian Tooley or Comp Cams. I am at 706 RWHP now.

After 4 modded cars the aggressive cam phase is gone.. I just think this is such a nice car its hard to tear it up like that.. I use the term tear it up loosely.. I'm doing a cam with a fuel lobe and similar to stock profile..
I have had 2 BTR cams in LS engines Stage 3 and stage 4 and lingenfelter cam in the other, and one LGMotorsports back in a LT4 in the 90s.. all were fantastic.. I can't see going wrong with BTR, Pat G, TSP, or even Vengence Racing or who ever bought the night fury or designed the night fury that MO FO new what he was doing.

Brian Tooley, Pat G, Texas Speed, Vengeance, RPM, and hundreds more all have solid choices for the LT4...
Go with something middle of the road is my advice. Don't go too small or the gains won't be there, and don't go too aggressive after sound because it will drive like crap around town. I personally have ridden in a car with the Vengeance Stage III cam and it sounded amazing at idle and screamed up top. The car put down like 775 RWHP and over 800 RWTQ with a crazy curve. There's videos of it on their youtube channel just search Vengeance Stage III LT4. |

Just remember that an aggressive idle cam can not be the only criteria. Nothing is more aggravating than a poorly matched cam swap. Make sure you have appropriate mods to work in concert with your cam. A nasty idle/sound do not mean a good running engine.

did you have them install their performance package? Or did you just do a cam? both?

Aggressive idle in a cam is usually the result of a lot of overlap....not something you really want in a blower car. Most big blower cams are barely touching the bottom end of small NA cams.

Looks pretty aggressive for a blower cam. My NA cam has lower duration and overlap and similar lift, but I thought it would not be appropriate for going FI in the future.

I did cam w/ 32% lobe, BTR dual valve springs, LS7 lifter/tray, pushrods, Tony Mamo TB, ported Supercharger, Rotofab CAI, ARH headers, X-pipe, NKG plugs, ATI dampner with LPE lower pulley and a few other things. Matt really knows his stuff and is a great tuner.

No upper pulley, just lower. No heat issues. I haven't been to track yet, but have a track day set up for March (road course). I've never been into drag racing, but may get a set of rear tires just to try it. I've always preferred road course, more bang for the buck. Six, 15 minute sessions vs a couple 11 second runs. but regardless, I'm anxious for the weather to warm and see what the car is capable of doing. I suspect I'll have to re-learn how to exit the corners with so much low end torque and possibility of spinning the tires.
