Admin Fee?

In recent correspondence with a dealer, he quoted me 'invoice' plus tax, title and a $248 admin fee. Is this 'admin' fee something that everyone pays at the dealer, or is he trying to slip in a little extra profit? Compared to what I plan on paying for the car, it is a small amount, but i'm not trying to pay an extra $250 either. Some words from those in the know would be appreciated.

Also he did say invoice, I'm assuming that is close to dealer cost, and better than MSRP and preferred pricing. Can someone correct me if I am wrong?

Thanks!

I am at work now and don't have my order form in front of me, but I remember somewhere on the bottom by the registration fee it says dealer fee or advertising fee and it was $45. There is also a note that says the dealer cannot exceed the $45.

at least he is being upfront and honest about ripping you off. Usually they wait until you are signing the paperwork to try to sneak those in on you.

Are they charging you a documentation fee also? Admin fee might just be another name for documentation fee.

The doc fee covers the new registration, transfer of insurance, transfer of license plates, (saves you from going to the DMV) your new state inspection sticker, and the paperwork involved. Mine was $179. Not saying it's fair, but most dealers charge a documentation fee.

My dealer charges $299 administration fee but this fee covers all costs involved needed to get the car on the road legally. It was more then I was willingly to pay however once I added up all the fees I paid it. By the time I would have paid for registration, license plate, title, inspection, and set up insurance it was going cost a little over $200 so I figured might as pay them $99 to do it all for me and save me the hassle of running around to do.

I have always refused to pay the "Doc fee" I have never "lost" a deal, as a result

"We will offer to order you a 2011 Camaro for dealer invoice plus tax (3%), tag (118.00) and $248 admin fee."

Above is a quote from what I received from said dealer.

In a later email I asked them to clarify what was meant by 'invoice'. This is what I received.

"The dealer invoice price is what we pay for the car from GM. The preferred owner price is a little lower than the Dealer invoice, GM offers that price to credit union members, suppliers and other private offers from the manufacturer."

I believe they are calling MSRP 'invoice'. I have not been to the dealership at all. I'm not sure how to take this. Am I getting double speak from the start, or is this correct?

This particular dealer has been very prompt with responses however, and has at least been up front about said fees. The plus of this dealership is that it is about five minutes from my house, and I have had service done there in the past and have been pleased.

What do you think?

I think you need to sit down with someone at the dealership to clarify things. The dealership is 5 minutes from your house? Make time to go talk with them instead of e-mailing just to claify everything.

They're being straight forward with you. Invoice is not MSRP, and if you are concerned then look at the invoice to verify it. If they are offering invoice pricing to you, then they will have no problem with offering the invoice to you. Sounds like you're getting all dealer-paranoid before even talking to them. Give them the benefit of the doubt, they're being upfront with you. Most dealerships charge an adminstrative fee or doc fee. Thats just part of doing business.

Fees?

Do these fees seem legit:
metro commuter trans fee-$50 (never heard of this)
doc fee-$103 (I usually pay $45-$55 for this if anything at all)
messenger-$115 (never heard of this)
use tax-$20 (never heard of this)

Fees that I know I have to pay
registration-$61.50
plate fee-$25
title-$50

$424.50 in fees seems way too high

Thanks
