hi guys, its not really much to worry about
basically, nearly all brakes squeak under certain conditions (damp).
the idea of the lead weights is to increase the mass of the callipers and so change the resonate frequency of the squeak
imagine this, you but a new camaro and you drive it in the rain, the brakes are super squeaky. that's not gonna do much for your confidence in the car so by changing the frequency of the brakes it makes it look seem better
since its glues on by adhesive, it wont make a difference because lead has a relatively low melting point (327.46 °C), this s easily achievable by the brakes, so the lead will melt and weld itself onto the brakes, so no problem there
for all you guys who say the glue will become "unglued", they've used a thermosetting adhesive, it doesn't melt, so it'll stick for long enough until the lead welds itself onto the callipers

Wouldn't the lead melt off eventually based on being able to be melted on??

Uh, yeah, lead won't "weld" itself to cast iron. Two completely different materials. Isn't there a finish on the calipers anyway?

The weak link will definitively be the adhesive.

Yup, thousands of internet experts immediately think of the possibility that heat might cause adhesive failure, but the automotive engineers who figured out how to make a whole Camaro would never think of it and use high-temp adhesive.

Sure, I'll believe that. It's not like GM has anything to lose...

I think some people need to research the boiling temperature of brake fluid and others need to take a quick tutorial on metallurgy.

That said, I don't like the stick-on weights. It's a hack and I would be willing to bet that the Engineers are facepalming to know that this is on delivered vehicles.

^^^Exactly how I feel, Garret, and hope GM's as upset about this as their engineers so we get an acceptable fix.

Yes, i was torn between a candle making elective class and metallurgy elective class last fall. Unfortunately I choose poorly....

Thanks, camaro1, now I know what to expect any day now when my car arrives. I won't be happy about it, but at least I won't be shocked. C'mon GM tell us what the final fix is, surely not this kluge!

Just got back from looking at a new arrival at my dealer. 11071 has the weights and they are painted gray or possibly black to match the caliper color.

And, they are stuck on with what appears to be regular double-sided foam tape. You can move them around very easily. It doesn't look like it's going to take much before they fall off, I think. At least when they are installed on wheels, centrifugal force helps hold them in place.

Only time will tell, I suppose.
