V6 Shorty Headers in California?

Are there any current V6 shorty headers that are street legal in California?

If not, anyone have any knowledge on when they might be created?

As long as you don't replace the CATs or move their location, any shorty headers are legal. Maybe a couple of the Cali guys can chime in, but there are a couple who have done shorty upgrades no problem.

Yeah, I have them. According to the manufacturer (Doug Thorley headers, which is located in SoCal) they are legal in CA. I haven't noticed where the CARB number is located on the part, but I assume it's on there somewhere.

Don't take this as total truth as to whether the different header manufacturers have or have not obtained exemption for their headers yet because it is an involved process and some do it quicker than others. Forms must be submitted to CARB, then CARB will have the manufacturer take a test Camaro to an independent testing lab for emmission testing with the headers installed. Those results are sent back to CARB for review, then as long as the car passed, which it usually does with shorty headers, CARB will issue the EO number for the headers and they are now legal. This process is expensive and takes SEVERAL months. Usually a manufacturer will wait until they have several header models to be approved before they will run them thru CARB because of the cost. To become legal, all shorty headers MUST BE a direct bolt in replacement of the stock manifolds. NO modifications are allowed. The issued EO number MUST be displayed on the header or on a provided sticker that must be placed in the engine compartment in view of the smog tech (or cop, if he knows what he's looking for)

I would trust DT's to be CARB compliant. Their set for the V8 are and the EO number is stamped into a plate that is welded to the left header, forward-most tube. Ask me how I know....

Doug Thorley shorty headers on their website are a little under $500, and pending E.O. approval.

How are they, though? Sound good? Any performance gains?

E.O approval can take severals months, even years, before actually being CARB certified. Since it is a new product, dont count on it being fully street legal. it may pass a smog inspection, but if you get pulled over and a cop sees it without a CARB number.. better believe you'll get a ticket. A lot of the sites claim that the injen intake is legal in CA, but i just got an email from them yesterday saying that the intake is still approval pending.

Check with Nick at D/T Headers. I have mine on order and asked about that also and he said all is o.k. as they are pending E.O.# and won't be a problem. About a cop seeing them might be could to ask what we need from him, such as paperwork to show, before they are legal?

How would I get them installed? What type of shop do I go to? I called my exhaust shop, and they don't do headers. So where would I get it done?
