Orange peel

I ordered Black but having second thoughts, Which colors hides orange peel the best ? Why can't they get a better finish these days ?

Okay Orange peel doesn't always happen, but any high gloss colour is going to show it. At the dealership were I ordered my Camaro I saw six vettes only one had orange peel it was a red '07 convertible, the reason I noticed it was that some new salesman they had just hired tried to tell me it was premium paint (what an idiot).

Their was an SRT8 parked out side of the dealer and it was unreal the orange peel in the paint. You'd think that robot could be set to shoot op free paint jobs, maybe its in the process ? they bake em right ? before or after they clear it I'm not sure. My Aunts Lexus looks sweet, almost color sanded smooth.

That's because Lexus does that at the factory, or at least that's what I've read.

Orange peel really ruins a paint job. Many BMW's I've seen have a ton of peel in their paints too.

Go for orange paint then! My orange Cobalt is showing a bit of orange peel, but I joke and say it just looks natural with the color.

Orange peel is a texture in the paint. Its caused by a mix of elements. Temperature, moisture, and mainly, the thickness of the paint being sprayed on. When a person sprays the final coat of clear orange peel is always the final result. Many guns with a skilled painter can paint with a minimal amount of orange peel but never no orange peel.

Factories use machines to paint their cars with deionizer machines which align the air molecules to be even and uniform to reduce orange peel but no matter what paints a car its impossible to have no orange peel unless the finish is wet sanded buffed and polished.

If you have a car with a factory paint job with orange peel you can have a shop wet sand it with 3000 grit sand paper, buffed, and polished. Its not something I recommend people with little or no experience should do.

Thats why when you look at panels that were refinished by shops. In most cases they look better then factory. Their wet sanded to remove orange peel and level the paint.

Note the ripples in the paint reflection? That's orange peel.
