When does having an engine repaired take away from the collectability of a car if it is the original engine i.e "matching numbers". There are plenty of collectable cars that have had the engine removed, reworked (blue printed) and reimplanted.

There are very few cars that are made these days (including a Viper) that are going to be collectible. Collectible is nebulus and no one can predict which car produced today will be tomorrow's prized Concours winner accept perhaps our Camaros!
Running at Laguna Seca isn't going to keep his car collectable. He was driving his car in the manner it was intended to be driven. With less than 5k miles, his engine was toast. When it went back to Dodge, they replaced the motor, not rebuilt it therefore eliminating the possibility of his car ever holding its value. He got a letter from Dodge stating that the motor was replaced due to a "factory defect" but I can't see that helping when he goes to sell it.

All high performace car's have their own unique quirks that you have to deal with. Each has their own maintence issues that need to be addressed. When you are spending upwards of $100K on a car, it needs to be able to run as advertised. I'm not sure that this is an isolated issue to this one Viper, but I know I would be furious if that was my car.

you may cross shop a Z06 or ZR1 and a Viper.... or a Ford GT they are all in the same league... a z28 does not fit the bill.
...We did. Our top three picks were an 04-06 Viper, 06-08 Corvette, or 2010 Camaro. And guess what? They're all in about the same price bracket ($35-45k).

The one car that stands between me and a Z28 is my friend's '66 Chevelle convertible that he wants to sell

i smoked vipers in my 99 trans am with 430RWHP. vipers are over rated. get the z28 IF/WHEN ....it comes out.... unless its a ACR-X....then get it. but i doubt it is. so go with the z28.

According to Dodge's website...2010 Viper 0-60 in 4 seconds. The CTS-V is 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. Assuming the Z-28 has the same engine, a stock Z-28 is faster than a stock viper...and $40k less...

Yea kind of comparing apples to oranges man... I mean your better off comparing a Viper to a Corvette. The Z28 is on the level of a GT500. But why not get a Corvette ZR1? or ZO6? If your looking to spend that amount of money. Better mpg, interior, comfort, then a Viper. Don't get me wrong Vipers are one of my favorite cars... ACR but there's a reason why Chrysler dropped the Viper for a couple years & why you see more Vettes then Vipers on the streets. But that also just makes it more rare to own one. Just depends on what you want out of a car. But personally driving around town in a Viper? Ehhh if you don't mind a rough ride for a DD then go for it. My friends dad owned two & hated them. He had a 2nd gen GTS, & then a 3rd gen SRT-10. Sold them both because he wasn't satisfied. Now hes driving in some exotics & much more satisfied

A good DD/quick car? Camaro Z28 or if you got a family CTS-V
Fast street/track car? Z28, ZR1, ZO6, SRT-10
Track car? ZO6, ZR1, SRT-10, ACR

The Z28 will not be faster than a 4th gen Viper in any way, BUT it will be a performance bargain, even at $50K - $60K.

The Viper should be faster and outperform both of these cars in theory, but these numbers show otherwise.
