Does any 6 speed owners see a need for a gear indicator?

Is it just me or do any of you 6 speed owners see a need for a gear indicator that would tell you what gear you are in? I don't drive my Camaro as a daily driver so maybe it is because I don't drive the car all the time, but often I find myself only in 4th gear instead of 5th or 6th gear. The car just runs so easy at 70MPH in 4th gear I always seem to forget to upshift into 5th or 6th. I also find myself in stop and go traffic kind of loosing track of what gear I'm in, or I find myself shifting from 3rd into 6th because I think I am in
5th gear instead of 3rd gear.

Like I said, maybe it's just because I don't drive the car very often. Or that I usually have the sunroof open and the radio volume up really loud and I'm not listening to the engine speed. But I often find myself wondering what gear I'm in. Last week I drove the car about 30 miles at 70MPH and didn't realize that I had been in 4th gear the entire time until I down shifted when I was exiting the highway.

I'm not new to owning a stick shift, I have owned several manual transmission vehicles but all of them were 4 speeds so you didn't have a problem knowing what gear you were in like with my 6 speed Camaro.

I haven't driven a 2010 yet but on gen 4 this what I do when I lose my place with gears. Shift into nuetral and let go of the shifter it will slide into the spot between 3rd & 4th.

LMAO, i was going to post the same thing...good show...lol

If you can't "hear" what gear you are in, just need more practise with a manual tranny...

I don't know about an indicator but I like to stay in 4th (1:1) because it's like an old automatic with lower gears. Fun is the key word, I didn't buy this car to save the world or any fuel. 4th gear at 70 is like nothing for this motor so if makes me smile so be it. Sometimes I'll use 5th and 6th but it has to be a long highway cruise where I can use them and forget about them when in those gears.

Shouldn't be too hard to know you're in 4th though, the stick is down and 70 MPH with the stick down in second would be screaming pretty much.

I say run it in 4th if it makes you smile, overdrive gears are for nothing more than fuel economy. Most of the time myself I also just purposely forget about 5th and 6th.

Oh edit: and when 3.90's or 4.11 gears become available I might see 5th and 6th a little more regularly.

no need for it...you should know the transmission like the back of your hand and instantly be able to tell what gear your in...i do with all of mine. but like you said though its probably just because you drive it alot. perhaps an option which provides an indicator, but allows it to be turned on and off by the driver?

Yep, kind of what I expected from some of you....

Hey SPANKT U...for your information there are many cars w/ manual transmissions that have a gear indicator. I'm sure you are such an expert driver you would never need such nonsense. Like a gear indicator in an automatic is necessary? Who the hell ever looks to see if you are in drive, reverse, or park with an automatic? Like you don't know?? Yet there is one in every car with an automatic transmission.

I gear indicator would be more useful to me than some of the stuff on the DIC. Like I give a damn about my instant fuel mileage, or what my coolant temp is. Yeah you need to know that all the time.

Opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one.
