Paddle Shifting - Ever Got You Into Trouble?

More than once now when driving on around with the paddles, I’ve come across a situation where quick acceration was needed to avoid someone or some thing. You jam the go pedal only to remember you’re in manual 4th or 5th gear. No kick down burst of speed, just a sluggish, and potentially dangerous reaction. Maybe best to leave in D so it switches back rather than M?

Or just drive the M6 and row your own ALL the time.

I've found that in not necessarily "emergency" situations but when a quick downshift need/opportunity presented itself, I've failed to react every time with the paddles. That never really ever happened to me when I drove a stick...

it could just be that one isn't trained to paddle shift, but I've found that each time I wanted a quick downshift while using them, I usually can't find the paddle right away.

I almost never use mine as when I turn the wheel very far my hands are no longer in line with them. I wish they were on the wheel instead of on the stock. Okay in a straight line I guess but thats about it.

I use them mainly when I pull onto my street to downshift to hear the exhaust note and make my neighbour feel all dead inside now that he has a Subaru WRX instead of his really nice sounding Mustang GT he traded for the Subie.... That is fun!

I’d have to say I’m pretty used to using mine. You just forget on the freeway sometimes. It will be the FIRST thing I tune out when the warranty’s up. But I rented a car last week with that even more annoying feature where the engine shuts off at every light. Another dangerous - and stupid feature, imo. Sometimes you need that 1 sec of go time when making a left into traffic. All in the name of saving a few teaspoons of fuel.

Agreed, WTF indeed.

I have made it a habit to drive nearly 100% of the time with my paddles, which has gotten me very good with them.

It is all about timing, due to the shift delay, and always being aware of where your paddles are.

Also, the biggest help for me was upgrading from the 2010 wheel to the 2014 ZL1(or SS) wheel. The wheel ergonomics, paddle placement, and actual paddles instead of buttons made a huge difference.

All of that said, I can still see a situation where you get caught in the 'wrong' gear and panic, shifting into an even worse gear.

I don't use the paddles in traffic.

After decades of driving manuals, I got an A6 Camaro so I could relax.

The paddles are for carving country roads, and nothing else, for me.

I hear ya, bro. But there’s just something that grates on me hearing that motor go in and out of AFM. Seems like a lot unnecessary systems working for little gain. If this were a Malibu, fine. To put it on a ‘Super Sport’ performance car was ludicrous imo. At the very least, turn it off in M/S. I know, I know... get over it.

I tried using paddle shift in a car where the paddles rotate with the steering wheel. Got too confusing with the paddles moving so much. Seems like stationary paddles would be a lot better.

Yes, it definitely would have been preferred. But you get used to the way ours is done.

You can also replace the paddles/buttons (Pre 2013) with longer aluminum paddles from Vitesse. They are much longer and extend to the lower part of the wheel as well.

When I go to the strip I put it in sport mode and let the computer do it.

I can run that thing up to the redline using the paddles shift after shift on the street but on the track no matter what I hit the rev limiter at least once during a pass :(
