newb questions, former rentals
Haven't posted on here ever but am a long time Camaro5 member, I have owned a bunch of cars since my 5th gen, a few C6 Z06's , a few CTSV's (one stock, one pulley and full exhaust), I was holding out for a C7 Z but can't justify the price, I cross shopped 6th gen ZL1's but same deal which got me looking at C7 Z51's (
all low to mid $40k range), from there I saw that there are several A8 1SS's local for $27-$30k all with 10k-15k miles former rentals, I'd have my pick of black, red, yellow, grey , the rental part is not a huge turn on for me but honestly I'd have driven the car as hard as anyone else is capable of, I've watched vids online and I see that in the real world they compare pretty close to the C7 Stringray What does everyone feel about the price and miles given they are former rentals? The big draw for me is price, if I have to spend $35k+ I'll find a used C6 Z or pay more for a C7 What would it take to hit high 10's / low 11's? Not looking to go e85/flex or to add any kind of power adder. Would intake/full exhaust / tune get me close to low 11's? Anything to look out for outside of general car issues? Thanks

I would never buy a rental. People beat the shit out of them, and the rental companies adhere to an absolute cost saving maintenance program. If it needed anything during the 15k miles, they repaired it in the cheapest way possible. Same with paint maintenance.....if you can even call it maintenance.

Oh trust me I'd have beat it harder than any renters did, I'd go over it with a fine tooth comb for cosmetic defects and all factory warranty should be active as well

The A8 is a horrible pos that they cannot, and will not fix.
C7, Camaro, trucks, new C7 ZR1 - all with A8 are junk. Google 8 speed trans problems. Fair warning. .

^^^
There have been some bad transmissions but the truth is the vast majority of them are doing fine with no issues. Yes, it is fair warning, if you go with the A8 you could end up with issues, but chances are pretty low, statistically speaking. |

Yep no problems with my 2017 A8 , but I know the older 2016 camaros have had first model woes. With that being said , If mine ever did take a dump I wouldnt mind retrofitting an A10 into my car .

If you are looking for a Z51, we will likely be selling ours around/after December 2018. It is a Laguna Blue Metallic Z51 Stingray M7 with the 3LT package and the Kalahari Interior....around 60K in miles.

Mine still barks the tires going from 3rd to 4th because it shifts so hard. It's been in 3 times and no tech has been able to fix it yet. I've decided that's how this car is going to be and given up on trying to get it fixed.
On a side note, the wife drives a 16' Dodge Charger Skat pack with the A8 and it has no issues at all. Makes me wonder how GM screwed this tranny up. |

No. Nope nope nope. Never a rental for me.
I know you said you'd go over it with a fine tooth comb... But a lot of the damage of 15,000 rental miles will show up down the road. I can tell that you really want a 6th gen, and it seems that you found some you can afford. However, most of these rentals end up being more expensive in the long run.

Rentals are driven so much harder than the usual cars on the road. They’re floored at every green light, eat every pot hole in their path, and serviced by High School drop outs. Most renters don’t give a crap because it’s not their personal vehicles.

You say youre going to go over it with a fine tooth comb.....
You gonna take the heads off and check the rings and seals too? Take off the rear diff cover? Check suspension bushing play with a pry bar? A rental Camaro SS. Hmmmmm |

I hate to discourage your thought process but I rented 3 times before I bought. I wanted to give an SS and v-6 a thorough review before deciding how much coin I was willing to drop when I was ready.
I beat them all up, traction off sliding sideways, I wanted to see what I was getting into. Fast forward to post ownership and joining this forum... there is a legitimate break in process that no rental could possibly have properly completed so for that reason alone, I'm going to go with negative on purchasing a former rental. I've learned that patience in finding exactly what you want in these situations will prevail. Once you decided on what you want, put some feelers out with some dealers, post on here and tell your friends, eventually you will find the car you want and at the deal that makes sense for your situation. Good luck, it will definitely be worth the wait. These cars are awesome.

Camaro rentals too
There are a bunch of 2017 Camaro rentals coming online now. I found them on CarMax and car gurus. I'm not advocating for them just letting you know they are out there.
