Suggest a car for max $4000 for daily commute use

Hi guys,

As I do not always want to take out my ZL1 on the wet roads etc, I am now looking for a car to use for commute to work and to use for bad days.

My budget is $4000 incl all costs.

You guys have any suggestions on a good car to buy for that price? And perhaps you know of one that is for sale in Dallas area?

I have no experience from cheaper Ford, Dodge, Chevy etc, as I am from Sweden. If I would get one in Sweden I would go for a VW Golf II/III or a Audi A3 or something like that...

Yeah I don't want it to be too high on the mpg either. A inline 4 cylinder is prefferable.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have any suggestions on specific models to search for?

And what is best to do? Browse online or just go to some random dealers that seem proper and tell them that I need a car for a driveaway price of $4k? How do you usually do things like this in the U.S.?

Or perhaps I should go for private?

Older cobalt would make a cheaper decent DD with decent mpg.

An old crown vic or grand marquis will last forever. They're super super comfortable too.

another good choice if you want to keep Chevy is a 00 and up Impala or Monte. they are comfy, good on gas, huge trunks (I can swallow 2 full size suitcases in mine with the back seat being fully functional).

Have you used Craigslist before?
http://dallas.craigslist.org/cta/
and you can always negotiate the price-

Honda Civic are known to be gas savers, maybe Accord and Toyota Corolla(Ae86 was a nice car to me). Volkswagen Golf & Jetta MK3-MK4(had a 99 jetta mk4 and 2003 golf). Audi A4 maybe. Chevy Cavaler. Ford Tauraus 90+.

For $4k I recently bought a 2000 Mazda Miata with 130k on it, Racing Beat header, intake, full exhaust, leather, cruise, and a roll bar. 30+ mpg and top down fun.

Spend $2000 on a good conditioned Subaru, spend $1000 for preventive maintenance, $700 for some vary good tires= you have an AWD car that will last you forever!
