Personally, what I've always practiced is to try to start the car early before I leave, maybe 10-15min depending on the outside temp.

From there I usually try to idle it through the neighborhood till the temp comes off the peg.

If I'm not scraping the windows, I usually just get up and drive. My second gear hates it, but I try to take it slow when it's cold.

You have a modern fuel injected car. There is no mechanical benefit to letting it run before driving.

I always let it run for about 5 minutes, to let the oil and temp get up to close to normal operating temps, then take off! It doesn't take long in these cars!

I just wait a few minutes. waiting for the oil temperature to go up would take for ever. I honestly just wait until my coolant temp is at 125 and just drive.

One thing that was mentioned in a different post was how powerful the car feels when you drive it "cold". I forgot who mentioned it, but I agree that if you drive it right after you start it (not letting it warm up first) it really seems to have more power. I hadn't noticed it until someone mentioned it on here and after I watched for it...I have to agree.

To answer the question of this post though, I agree with mikeyg36. If the front windshield is frosted, then I only warm it up in advance to clear the windshield...otherwise, I just drive it cold.

Willing to bet a cold engine feels faster because it's not heating up the air as much as once it's been running awhile. Colder air is denser, therefore you can mix in more fuel w/ the denser air, thus producing more power.

No need to let it idle. Just wastes gas. No benefit. Just drive it easy for the 1st few minutes.

I just let it come off the fast idle from starting, and then ease thru the gears. No HARD acceleration until temps are up.

No need to warm up first. Just keep it under 3,000 rpm until everything comes up to temp.

My neighbors would probably call the authorities if I allowed my car to idle for more than 30 seconds in my neighborhood. With that being said I start up and roll out. Nothing aggressive until she's nice and warm.
