Texas Proposes Elimination of Ethanol in Gasoline
Texas Proposes Elimination of Ethanol in Gasoline
Legislation (H.B. 1693) to prohibit the sale of motor fuel with an ethanol mixture was introduced in the Texas House of Representatives. Please Contact Members of the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee (List Below) Immediately to Request Support for H.B. 1693 H.B. 1693 recognizes that ethanol fuels cause problems with fuel pumps, fuel gauges, as well as other engine performance issues, especially over a period of time when the vehicle is not used. Current high performance specialty parts along with pre-model year 2001 cars and parts may be most susceptible to corrosion. H.B. 1693 acknowledges that ethanol has been shown to decrease fuel mileage. H.B. 1693 recognizes that the life span of vehicles and equipment can be dramatically reduced with the wrong fuel and that owners could be confronted with break downs. Anti-corrosion additives are available for each purchase of gasoline but can become expensive, burdensome and require consumer education. Environmental Resources and Energy Committee members to request support for H.B. 471. Please e-mail a copy of your letter to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org. Also, please forward this Alert to your fellow car enthusiasts. Urge them to join the SAN and help defend the hobby! Thank you for your assistance. From the first post: "H.B. H.B. 1693 recognizes that the life span of vehicles and equipment can be dramatically reduced with the wrong fuel and that owners could be confronted with break downs. Anti-corrosion additives are available for each purchase of gasoline but can become expensive, burdensome and require consumer education." Those are the stated reasons.

since they usually use ethanol during colder winter months, I'm surprised you use ethanol in Texas.

I love Texas.
Also, the whole ethanol free thing is ruined if they use the same pump as the ethanol gas. Has to be a whole seperate pump and hoses. |

Not sure it will ever pass. Modern fuel delivery equipment is supposed to be fine with ethanol, and they're talking about cars older than 2001. That's 14 years ago. As far as I know, you can still buy ethanol-free fuel at some retailers.
The only reason I'd be in favor of it is to get rid of the corn subsidies. Couldn't care less about the effect on modern vehicles, since most of them are equipped to handle it anyway (and many equipped for E85). |

For instance, in the GNO area (greater New Orleans), there is one fuel terminal that supplies all the fuel for all the local fuel stations. This includes name brands such as Shell, Chevron, Texaco, Conoco, Fina, Racetrack and so on. The only difference between the brands is their specialized fuel additives (or lack there of) which is mixed at the time of loading. The base stock fuel that you are filling your car with is the same across all brands. But hey, why did you say that ethanol free gas is only 91 but the name brand is 93? Well the refined(non-ethanol) base stock is only 91 octane, its only when they mix the ethyl alcohol (a different form of octane) during loading onto fuel trucks is when it bumps the octane to somewhere around 92-93 octane. Anyways, I wish you the best of luck in Texas on trying to get this passed. Maybe it will light the fire for other states to follow suit. And once that's done, lets see if you can kill the DEF requirement on Tier 4 diesel engines..... |

Ethanol subsidies are just welfare for the farmers.

Texas actually leads the country in alternative energy. Sweetwater is the wind capital of the world.
