I prefer a deposit as it helps keep dealers honest. I had tried to by a car that was already ordered. Dealer and I agreed on 1k over invoice and got a piece of paper with our signature on it with no deposit. Some one came in after me but before the car arrived and agreed to msrp. Guess who got the car? Dear told me if I put a deposit it would have been mine but no deposit doesn't hold a vehicle.

The deposit for a car thing is nuts to me. GM used to frown on dealers taking deposits. Maybe all you saying refundable is the dealers loophole. It's not like you ordered a red car with yellow interior...

The first dealer I spoke to wanted 20% NONREFUNDABLE up front, he said he had been burned in the past by people ordering and not taking the vehicle. I immediately ceased communication with him. Second dealer wanted $1000 refundable, I said that's fair and I traded in my car as the deposit which was much more than the $1000 deposit.

Check wit local laws but i believe that you have a right to reciention as long as you dont take delivery and dealer has to refund all money...
