Actually that's wrong. There are 4 different 285's. The GT500 tires are a lower load rating for a lighter car. 92Y for Gt500 vs. 100Y for ZL1 . So Goodyear makes the F1 G2 in only 8 different sizes/load capacity. 4 for the ZL1 and 4 for the GT500. I still think the tread compound is the same on all of them. And apparently my friends 2012 GT500 has the SVT Performance Package because the base GT500 in '12 got smaller tires and not the Goodyear F1 G2.
And the ZL1 tires are the heavier.

I think this thread needs to stay alive even though it's getting a little long in the tooth.
I'll be driving my 2013 ZL1 vert not exactly daily, but on nice days. Never in the snow and unlikely in the rain. Nice days in KY can be cold days, and my car barn is nice but unheated. I'll never likely track the car. So is there any good reason that I shouldn't consider finding the best all-season performance tire I can, put them on for good, and sell my factory tires to one of my C5 trackers at a good price? I was just concerned about driving on dry, but cold 30-40 degree days, and also, not having a warm place for them when it's -10 to + 20 which it will be in Jan and Feb. All season tires can just stay on the car, in the cold barn all year round.

I just don't want to see you put a "meh" tire on the car and not get full enjoyment of the car in the warm weather is all.. |

Yeah, I'm definitely considering the 2nd set.
Thanks, Geno

I am very happy with them as they have very good traction on cold days. Also they were half the price of the Pirellis. Last edited by crangie; 12-19-2012 at 09:24 AM. Reason: misspelled |

If you're storing your car in an unheated area you could always put it on 4 jack stands to take the pressure off the tires. A heck of a lot cheaper than 4 new wheels and tires.

...bottom line in cold weather regions of the Country on factory tires. Drive the car if you want, have fun, listen to the radio...just don't stand on it or try to drive it hard. It's not forgiving. One might as well be on ice... traction deficit to the max.

To be honest I have no idea why. The dealer recommended to use them.

For those less fortunate souls that don't have a garage, and are stuck with a carport, driveway, etc. That live in areas where the temps might hit around or below 40F. What do you do then? My initial thoughts were to just be easy on cold days or not drive it. When its a bit warmer out, take it for a spin, gradually let them warm up. But the days it since in cold or even possibly light snow, there isn't much you can do. So the best bet is to just avoid these tires?
I was considering getting these as I track the car in the spring/summer, but don't have the luxury of a garage. The car is driven in fair weather, but doesn't get "stored". What do you experts say, stay away from the Supercar G2s? |
