$350 15000 mile service
They want to charge me 350 to "check" my break, top off my liquids, clean my throttle body, and change my oil! Have any of you done this? Are there any other alternatives ?

dealer up sale, not required..
If you read your manual you will find that @ 15K the only thing the manufacturer recommends is a tire rotation and oil change. Dealers have their own "schedule of maintenance" which has zero to do with the manufacturer recommendations and 100% to do with sucking your wallet dry. if you think your Throttle Body needs cleaning, do it yourself for a $6 can of TB cleaner @ pep-boys.. That being said, I recently did just that, (15K miles on mine as well) as well as changed my cabin filter and air filter, even though it is not required until 45K I drive thru a major freeway construction zone every day to and from work and found that both filters were in really bad shape (which isn't saying much for my lungs as well I suspect). cost me a whole whooping $80 to change both filters and clean the TB myself, and about 30 minutes of my time.

Look at the maintenance schedule that came with your car. All you need is an oil change. And you can do that yourself.
Throttle body cleaning? Something I have never done, even on cars with 200,000 miles. The air filter advice is good. Look at the air filter to see if it's dirty. Probably not, after 15,000 miles, unless you are in the habit of driving on a lot of dirt roads, like the Dukes of Hazard! |

Ridiculous up- sell. Oil change ought to be about $40, tire rotation often thrown in for free (it's on the lift, takes just a couple of minutes extra).
The dealer I used to go to for oil changes lost my biz because the freak at the service counter was ALWAYS trying to upsell me, and insisted endlessly that whatever the manual said needed to be cut in half (do 100,000 maint. at 50,000 miles)... then halved again (so, yes, 100,000 mile services HAD to be done at 25,000 miles) or else the warranty would be voided. Lying sack of fail is what that guy is. $350 is utterly ridiculous. Checking your brakes, even? 10 to 1 odds that any place trying to rip you off with a $350/ 15,000 mile service will ALSO "find" all kinds of work that "needs" to be done on your car. The $350 is only the start... they will want a lot more where that came from. Go somewhere else. Please. Few things make my heart heavier than to see rip- off automotive joints profit off of stealing money from those who do not otherwise know. Run... go far away from there. Please. Find a DIFFERENT dealer, or another shop, GM or not. Just don't spend $350 to give them the opportunity to "find" $1000 worth of brake work you "need," and $1000 worth of Fetzer valve work, and another $1000 to remachine the gearheads. |

Do it yourself. My GF says she finds it incredibly sexy to see me under the hood doing stuff to my Camaro. Who would have thought greasy, dirty hands would be a turn-on...
