4th Gen General Questions
I'm looking at a 2002 Camaro Z28 Convertible to replace my Avalanche. What kind of gas mileage can I expect? Will it make a good daily driver? Love my Avalanche but I never use it as a truck so I've been looking for something sports with a manual transmission to drive. I figure fit an finish should be similar and I can't imaging gas mileage being worse.

Expect probably- 24-26 mpg on average, if you drive decently, obviously milage will fluctuate with driving style. Good daily driver in the summer, but the soft top could be a problem in the winter - and the fact that it's a Camaro anyways, I wouldn't drive it in the winter.
but those who have owned 4th gens for a longer time than I have will have better insight. |

In my 02 Z28, I was never able to put in more than 15 gallons at the pump. In my 02 SS, I haven't been able to put in over 14.2 gallons...kinda weird. Maybe I need to run it dry just to see how much gas it takes and the relative size of the gas tank. I think it's supposed to be a 15 gallon tank. BUT...I have driven from Northern San Antonio (Bulverde area) down to Port Aransas and back (roughly about 340 miles) on one tank of gas. That meant on highway miles I was getting approximately 24 miles to the gallon. During regular city driving, I might get around 17mpg. The only thing it takes getting used to, is parking further away from curbs...yes, I've cracked a front facia. In the avalanche, you can just park on top of them if you want... You'll be more than happy with a 4th Gen. The Z28 has a ton of power. The only other thing you might need to worry about is a case of "heavy foot." |

I think the GVW on a fourth Gen. is close to 4100 lbs. I believe the maximum passenger weight is somthing like 900 lbs. (from the owners manual.) My car, with SFCs, bigger wheels and tires, and some other stuff knocked the scale to 3625 lbs. without me in it. Like Tag said, I believe V8s with M6s came right in at about 3400+ lbs.

my pewter '02 Z28, with 19" CCWs, 12 bolt rear end, half a tank of gas and all other mods, weighed in at 3825 with me in the driver's seat... and I weighed in at over 270lbs at that time... so a Z28 weighs in pretty close to 3300lbs without a driver... the Z28 'verts weigh in slightly heavier due to the structural reinforcements that had to be done to make it crash and rollover safe.
I've recently had the chance to talk to several 'vert owners, as I was looking into getting one for a daily driver for Naomi... it would seem that everyone has the same praises (love top down cruising, easy operation of the roof, not much noisier than a normal t-top 4th gen) and the same gripe: the roof wears out pretty quickly if you leave it outside every day and every night... so if you have a garage, I'd recommend keeping it in there... and the 'vert owners I talked to were all automatic owners, so they said they were getting about 20mpg average with their cars... so expect a manual to be slightly higher, probably in the above mentioned 24mpg range.
