P0306 & Service Stabilitrak

First off, the details of the car are in my signature...it is Procharged with Custom Tune...no problems at all in the 4 months since the tune and a full track day back in early May. Had another track day this last Friday and the car threw codes:

P0171 - Bank 1 System Too Lean
P0174 - Bank 2 System Too Lean
P0300 - Random - Multiple Misfire Detected
P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2

My tuner said that his tune was basically maxing out the fuel system so the lean codes are not as surprising as the other two.

Fast forward to Today and the Traction Control and CEL lights have been on with a "Service Stabilitrak" pop-up in my dash. The code for this new occurence is P0306 Cylinder 6 Misfire. Car is idling and running rough with diminished power. This likely explains the P0300 and P0430 being that Cylinder 6 is in Bank 2 (right?).

Current plan is to check the spark plug and wire for Cylinder 6...hopefully it is as simple as that versus compression or something else. I used NGK 6510 plugs upon the ProCharger install...didn't think they would fail/foul so soon.

Based solely on what you are posting I would say the motor is hurt.

A compression and leak down test will verify one way or the other.

Maxing out the fuel system is the number one reason for breaking engines.

Ted.

How did you plugs look??

Are you 91 octane or 93 tuned?

Oh god I hope not.

Gonna check the plugs and if that doesn’t fix it I will have my mechanics do the compression and leak down.

OK possible good news. The Cylinder 6 Plug was visibly dry fouled as per NGK’s website images. I will ask someone to test it later.

The car started up and idled just fine. Will take it out tomorrow to see if it is good to go. Probably change the other 7 plugs soon or something like that. I am super surprised they are fouled so quickly. I only had this kit on for 8,000 miles max.

What plugs and what gap are you running?

NGK 6510...the gap they come out of the box (I thought you weren't supposed to mess with the gap on iridium IX plugs).

I've seen you write that before and was gonna PM you about that. Why is it that ProCharger says to use 6510? Do I need to get a new tune just to go from the 6510 to 6509?

Sorry dumb questions.

Not a dumb question at all.

Heat range 5 is stock, 6509s are 6 or 1 heat range cooler.

You only need to go 1 heat range cooler for most supercharger systems under 10 psi.

6510 Heat range 7s are too cold for normal street use, they foul rather easily.

Thanks for that...do I need another tune for when I change to the 6509s? Why does ProCharger recommend the 6510s if they are a full 2 ranges cooler?

I have now started to read up on spark plug ranges.

Update - car is in with a mechanic getting all 8 plugs changed over to the NGK 6509 plugs as per Ted's expert advice. Also getting the air filter cleaned and re-oiled since they are taking the thing off anyways.

I am still getting P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2

I believe this is one of those codes that requires like 50 drive cycles to clear. I think I am close to 50 since it started but not quite. I have been waiting for the spark plug change out to address this since I assume the other plugs are close to as fouled as #6 was.

I will be flashing back to ProCharger's OTS map for the rest of the Summer until my primary mechanic gets back (hopefully) from his illness. At that time, I will be working with Ted on a new custom tune to be ready for the 2019 track day season.

I am still very wary of the health of the motor. I'm hoping it isn't damaged internally but will start putting money aside if it is. I am really considering NOT doing the NASA HPDE weekend at Thunderhill that I had as part of a vacation in Early August...unless I am feeling really good about the car or OK with not going flat out. :(

I'll have my primary mechanic do a leak down / compression test...is there anything else I should suggest he check?
