Try the Dell website. you can find some pretty sick 'holiday' deals on their website. though they usually have good promotions. I got my computer last winter at 25 percent off, which led to some needless upgrading, like 8 gigs of ram
all the computers are customizable too so you should be able to get what you want. its worth checkign out.

Sign up for the Dell Newsletter, and check the holiday deals on the dell site. Some people bash Dell, but i swear by mine.

what kind of price-range are you looking for? that'll make a big difference in what you want to look at

Try Best Buy or Circuit City. The last 3 computers we bought have been from one of these two places as each time no one was able to beat their prices, not even Dell.com or gateway with their so called sales.

basic prices start around 500 on the dell site, doesn't take very much in upgrades to bring it to 1000. computers aren't cheap, my Dell Laptop was ~2500, it's not a small purchase. i needed a high-performing machine though, so i had to dish out the cash from a good machine.

Mindz has a point, if you want it cheap, build it from the ground up yourself. buy the case (or in your case you can probably use the case from your current), and add the parts you want.

if you're just looking for a bare-bones basic machine check around the places like best buy, circuit city, and see what deals the manufacturers have.

I have to replace my 6 year old slow poke Dell. Going to Best Buy for a new Dell for less than $600.00. 4 gig, 320 hd, 18.5 lcd, dvd r, etc.

Dell's Secrete web sites

A little known fact about about Dell is that they have an Outlet Site that sells contract computers (all flavors) at cost when the corporate or government bean counter cancels a contract. In a contract scenario, spec computers are built to a bean counter's specification and held on contract prices in inventory and when this contract runs out or canceled dell is still holding spec computers in stock, therefore blow-out time. The also resell returned, discontinued and "scratch & dents" systems on this site, too.

Check out this site.

or if your are a student or corporate employee or government employee check out this sites.

Happy Hunting!

Or, you can buy a computer that won't need to be replaced in 9 months.

And also costs a crapload more than other computers.

If you're on a budget, then make sure you consider the total cost of ownership, including the life span of the machine. Those iMacs are a bargain.

OP has made it pretty clear that Windows 7 is a requirement
PCs commonly have 14 in 1 card readers
and Dual Drives

He's also on a budget, as Fen wisely pointed out.
I think a PC is the right choice for the OP.

billyjk7, if you don't mind my asking; would you be eligible for student discounts? (i'm not asking your age here ) just trying to get an idea of what kind of discounts you might be up for.
