Anyone catch GMA this AM???

Toyota has been quoted saying they have known about the quality issue for a while, but were more focused on global expansion.

Thats a slamdunk for every person who wants to sue them.

They had some monkey boy from consumer affiars on Fox News this morning seriously trying to down play this. He kept saying every car company has recalls, toyota still builds great quality cars, yada yada yada, but they grilled him pretty good on the show.

You know damn well if it was a recall from the big 3 that was killing people he would of been in full blown attack mode.

And then they'd probably fake an explosion to demonstrate the danger.

Seriously...foreign cars are dangerous. I think they have Gremlins or something.

Actually, although that's what was "advised", it's bass-ackwards...

1) Put it in Neutral FIRST (which will interrupt the unintended forward motion)

and THEN

2) Apply the brakes, and head for the curb/shoulder.

IF you SLAM on the brakes and THEN put it in NEUTRAL, you'll suddenly stop a lot quicker than surrounding traffic would likely be able to safely respond...causing even more mayhem...

Those who drive in icy/snowy/slippery conditions should already know the quickest way to stop ANYTHING in a shorter distance is to put it in Neutral first... The same situation applies here.

You know Toyota owners most likly will forgive them... every time I heard two owners of any foreign car talk together they start comparing problems, but if they talk to anyone else they are the most reliable cars ever built...Mainly because they don't want us American car owners to figure out that they are no more reliable than anything else... and who wants to admit to his buddys that he must have been the only one to get a Lemon...

The problem with the advice they posted about the brakes and going to neutral is that 2 reports I read(one an Avalon, the other an ES 350), is that when they hit the brakes, the cruise control light simply blinked(these both fell under the "unintended acceleration" issue). When they tried shifting to neutral, the car stayed in drive.

Perhaps its time for Toyota fans to strictly drive manuals so at least the computer can't control the whole drivetrain.

I didn't know this but a lot of the other manufacturers do have a built in safety that cuts the throttle of the brake is hit. I bet everyone in the car world is rewriting their programming to include this now if they haven't already.
Nope, I don't get Car and Driver.

I thought something like that would be standard equipment by now...guess not for some.

This just in...

http://media.gm.com/content/media/us.../Feb/0201_vibe
Quote:
“We ran the Vibe wide open at 60 miles an hour and the brakes were able to bring the vehicle to a safe stop within 169 meters, consistent with our internal requirement for brake performance.” said Martin Hogan, GM director of brake systems.

In the rare case of a sticking throttle, a driver should apply the brakes firmly and steadily until you come to a stop. Do not pump the brakes, which can deplete the available vacuum boost from the brake system.
