flip key fix & recall

both the key fobs that came with my 2010 finally bit the dust as the buttons broke rendering certain functions unusable and explicit obligatory filth spewing from my mouth with disdain and frustration for GM. finally, i succumbed to the key fob recall hoping it would serve to replace the key fob with a new one...WRONG!

***in case you didn't know...the recall replaces your flip key with a standard key...but they reuse your keyfob. so yeah...insult to injury

at $50 each...i had new keyfobs with the accompanying key...which i hated.

so i decided to do something about it ...

upon inspection of the new key fob, there seemed to be a fix...so here it is.

1. obtain tension 2 pins 44253-A 1/16 x 1/4 (11 cents each)
2. remove key blade from key: channel locks, torch, wet paper towel
3. removed remaining plastic on blade: direct heat till the plastic lights up like a candle and wipe off with wet towel
4. insert key blade into the slot and set pin: i used a vice to drive the pin flush with the blade and finished setting it with a nail punch

done and done

Yep. This is the most common "fix" for the recall based on the several relative posts. It was easy, cheap, and satisfying. I'm surprised you had so much residual plastic on the blade though. It may have been from the heat I imagine. I used a dremel with a cutting blade to weaken the area holding the blade, then just twisted it right out.
