Belt shredded
I took a road trip in the 1LE on Monday. After about 300 miles of easy highway driving I stopped to grab a bite. Out of habit I popped the hood to check on things and there were belt remains everywhere. One of the belts apparently broke and it knocked the other belt off the pulleys. Both belts were shredded. Must have just happened before I parked because there were no drivability issues. I had the stereo cranked, so never heard a noise. Only 1900 miles. Dealer covered under warranty no problem. The tech believes the supercharger belt broke first. Back on the road, no problem. Dealer was great. Anyone hear of belt issues on 2017/2018 ZL1s? Weird that a brand new belt breaks in normal driving.

I’ve not read any posts about belt breakage. Hopefully just a one time occurrence.

The dealer had not heard of any belt issues either.

You've done some light under-the-hood work...any chance you damaged the integrity of the belt? Could have been a slipped screwdriver or razor, or slightly pulled it out of groove etc.

A buddy of mine had his supercharger belt break within months. He had a '17 ZL1 A10 that he tracked frequently.
I bought a spare to take with me to the track, but I might go ahead and put it on after reading this.

Luke had his break on track in his '17 A10. Time to get a spare!

The other thing I thought of was that I had taken the rain baffle out from beneath the hood. It is a crazy thought, but I wonder if that created enough turbulence or air flow in the wrong spot to impact the integrity or positioning of the belts. Just a shot in the dark.

Gates makes the RPM and the Green, and a few others.
I have HEARD the RPM is the better belt for our purposes as the Green is VERY stiff because they are truck belts i.e. like big ass diesel trucks. BUT the green belts can be had for like 30-35 bucks where as the RPM belts are ~2x as expensive(50-60). As far as part numbers, on a fully stock LT4 the Gates numbers are K080852HD(green) or K080852RPM. There is actually a TSB out for the Corvette Z06 that has the dealer install the green belt. |
