wheel weights! what there purpose...??

I noticed I lost a few wheel weights on one of my tires the other day while putting air in em and well I realized that I have no clue as to why there r even there. In other words what purpose do they serve and since I'm missing some should I got to my local tire shop and have em put back on ...?

Thanks for the feed back everyone ...

You deffinatly need to take it and get them balanced that can cause uneven wear on your tires, and extra stress on suspension parts due to the vibration. Vibration usually starts around 45mph. And like (unknown ssrs) said have a tire shop due it you can't just put the wheel weights anywhere they have a machine that spins the wheel and tire that tell them where and how much weight to use.
