How to store your car

Going in storage 11/1. Anything special you guys do to your Z before putting it away for the winter and do you use stabil? For you manual guys, do you leave your car in gear or do you use the ebrake or both? Thx!

I have the same questions. Mine's going into hibernation at the end of October in a heated storage unit.

Also... Lift on supports to give the tires a break?

Jack stands, battery tender, stabilizer in the fuel, oil change when she comes out in the spring... that's my plan.

Not sure what else is reasonable / realistic, but would love to hear other opinions!

Here's a few tips...
  1. Change oil
  2. Fill gas tank w/ premium, add fuel stabilizer
  3. Clean the car inside and out
  4. Inflate tires to max road pressure plus 1 psi per month of anticipated storage
  5. Do not use jack stands
  6. Carpet, foam, or cardboard under tires if you don't have flatstoppers.
  7. Mouse/rat traps and mothballs outside the car
  8. Dryer sheets inside the car and under hood around the wiring.
  9. Steel wool or copper choreboys in the exhaust
  10. Battery Tender
  11. Plastic visqueen moisture barrier on the floor if storage is unheated
  12. Post this list on the steering wheel so you don't forget to remove everthying before starting.

1. Don't want to put it on blocks, the suspension is indexed to have weight on the wheels
2. Inflate the tires to 45 psi (and if you're paranoid lift the car once a month and rotate the wheels a quarter turn) so they won't flat spot.
3. Box or two of baking soda in the interior
4. Full tank of gas with stabil
5. Battery tender
6. Wash and wax her before you put a car cover on

This makes me wonder about the unsold cars, sitting on dealer lots during the winter months that are in cold climates. Except for the batteries that need to be charged are jumped sometimes, they seem to be okay when spring arrives.

On my Gen 3 Viper and it was never recommended to engage the ebrake unless absolutely necessary, even in storage. Sometimes the ebrake wouldn't fully release and therefore the pads would get unnecessary wear and could eventually create surface damage to the rotor. Always has made me a little concerned about using it on any car. Of course if you have a lift or use jack stands, it's a non issue.

That last one is a great one!

Thanks guys...all great suggestions, do you use the ebrake or just leave it in gear?

Leave it in gear, especially if you plan on rotating the wheels.

I have stored hunders of cars over the years. If it's only over the winter months there is really no need to do anything outside of cleaning it, fill the fuel tank, make sure the tire pressure right and use a battery maintainer. I also change the oil when coming out of storage in case any condensation ended up in the crankcase. In saying this, my stuff stays inside in a conditiined enviroment too.

Me too.... if you're going to store a car for a year because you got an overseas situation, all the major step above is spot on. But if you're just storing for three months in the winter, you don't need to do anything else than what's listed by Motörhead… If you have a rodent problem, add that to your regimen. I will add I've seen some imprinting from covers where the car was waxed, therefore I suggest you just wash the car clean and then cover it.

Wow for the last 10 years I havent done all that much, with any of cars I have stored. Put it on a battery tender, and thats it. My garage is somewhat climate controlled. Never had any tires issues from sitting.

I didnt change the air pressure in the tires.
I didnt change the oil
I didnt fill the tank up with fuel.
I always keep the car clean, and waxed, so thats nothing new.
I dont put a cover on it

To those who use battery tenders, on the ZL1 1LE with battery in the trunk (not sure if non 1LE is located there), it's very difficult to get access to the negative terminal through the panel opening. Do you guys use the satellite terminals under the hood or clamp directly to the battery? I've always hooked directly to the battery, but I just can't get the clamp in the far back corner in the trunk.

Just did this today and took pics. I went under the hood, removed the cover that's attached to the fuse box, there are a couple of unused posts under there, so I hooked the battery tender to one. I'll try and post pics tomorrow.
