Starter Keeps on Turning Over Even When Running

I turn on the car, the engine starts and the starter stays engaged. I have had it in the dealer for this problem twice now and of course it never happens when they have it...half a tank of gas later and 100 miles by the dealer.

The first time I took it in the dealership replaced the starter and flywheel, but its happened again, and again, and again.

Anyone else with this problem? Though patient I think the dealer thinks I'm nuts.

Sounds like a defective ignition switch.

the ignition switch is not wired to the starter like old vehicles

ignition switch does not start these vehicles, the ignition switch is nothing more than a request signal sent to the bcm to start the vehicle, if the bcm (and tcm for l99's) see's all data that it needs to start"ok" it then sends a signal to the ecm to command the starter to crank

you can have your camaro running and try to crank the engine again and it wont allow the starter to engage the flywheel when the engine is running

sounds like a bad starter relay or ecm / bcm, or wiring issue to the starter relay

You may want to see if your dealer can keep it over night to get it on a cold start to see if that might help in diagnosing it on their end. If that fails let me know and I'll do what I can to assist you.

Thanks, they kept it for two weeks but of course it didn't fail. Now it cranks without starting. It is going back in yet again. Pretty frustrating but it is happening more often.

try another

I would try another dealer. Different eyes might help resolve this issue. That many miles and too have the car that long and not correct the problem speaks a lot about their expertise.I like the previous response above.Hope you get it resolved. Nothing worse than a car that is not dependable.Nor a dealer that just keeps changing parts hoping to solve a problem.

I replaced a starter on a much older car and pinched a wire causing it to short and the starter to run continuously till it burnt up. Does anyone think it could be a wire shorting out, or are there too many sensors and computers involved now a days for it to be that simple.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your car,,,,,,,,, if you start to crank your car and let up it will continue to crank on it's own,,,the PCM is the cause,,,,it is a normal thing,,,,,,,,, now if the car is still cranking after the engine starts running that's a different story. There is a bulletin on this and I give it to my customers all the time. It feels like the car is cranking on it's own or the starter is sticking,,,,,,, good luck

I had this problem on my Chevy Silverado some years back. Its a sticking solenoid on the starter. Tell them to replace the solenoid or the entire starter. It will keep happening and finally will stay that way
