Interesting videos .... K&N drop in vs. cold air intakes (not brand specific)

I've been stuck at home with a nasty head cold, and haven't been able to do much more than roam the internet. Lacking anything better to do, I decided to research K&N air filters-I even found a really cool video about how K&N filters (and their side brands - Spectre/Airraid etc) are made.

Anyhow, I typed in "K&N air filter vs Stock" and hit the mother load-videos galore ...

The interesting thing is that a large majority of the vids (the ones not hating on the K&N-which were mostly posted by the clueless ones) claimed that a K&N drop in filter outperformed many CAI set ups Some of the tests were HP based and others were MPG based. I even found a few that claimed the paper stock filter outperformed them both ... on a dyno.

All in all, it made for an interesting day of otherwise being sick & bored out of my mind.

In my opinion, the amount of flow is only a part of the reason you can net a few HP from an aftermarket airbox setup. If the K&N drop in and stop box flow enough for the power level, most of those boxes are plastic so they insulate better from heat and they are sealed besides an opening to outside the engine bay. Most "Cold air intakes" are honestly hot air intakes...

Lots of data to consume there - make sure you pop up the spreadsheet, which has all the data from the 2009 and 2017 tests there. Short version, the Cold Air Inductions with a scoop owns all!

Don't most stock tubes have some type of resonator in them which restricts airflow?

The stock intakes have a helmholtz resonator that, while possibly affecting airflow, really just quiets the intake a bit. Kind of like a j-pipe for exhaust set ups, which I think is actually a simplified helmholtz resonator anyway.

Roto-Fab or Cold Air Inductions and a scoop is pretty good.

I agree with this. I did mine strictly for cosmetic reasons.

Ha! My first EVER mod was a K&N CAI that I put on my í95 Z28. I remember saving up every extra penny I had for 2-3 months to buy it and how excited I was when I walked out of the local speed shop with it. I immediately installed it when I got home and took the car out for a test drive. Talk about disappointment! Iíve still put one on every V8 car Iíve owned since then but I still have yet to actually feel any sort of power gain from them. The only one I ever really felt was worth the money was the Air Hammer I put on my í05 300C. Good Lord the sound that thing made at WOT was glorious! I havenít heard any other CAI come even close to reproducing it.

On the contrary. It absorbs reverse pulses and allows more complete cylinder filling.
