I just recently bought the GoPro hero 3 white edition which is the $199 version - and it works great for what I want which is just basic filming of the quarter mile etc

I went ahead and got the black edition, which is the $399 version, and love it. It has a lot of pretty cool features the other two versions do not.
If you only need it for basic stuff and do not care about having top quality video, the white edition should be fine. But if you have the extra $100, I would go ahead and get at least the silver version.

i got the contour +2 and love it. can control it from my smartphone which is good for changing the settings on the go. the quality on the new cams is a lot better than older models and you cant go wrong with contour or go pro.
