What my dealer said about tuning my car

I took my SS to the dealer to have the check valve installed today and while I was there I asked about tuning my car and how it would affect my warranty. He said " Get one of the hand held tuners and if you have to bring it back to us flash it back to your original tune and you will be fine." then he started naming a for tuners to use(the only one I remember him saying was diablo). Take that info with a grain of salt, but I did just want to pass it along. Still havent decided to tune mine yet,but I am getting a little bit closer.LOL

Same here. I want that extra hp but don't want to lose warr. I am sure I will go ahead with it in the next 6 months or so.

any change will show up in the car's computer....that means tuned then back to stock. You're cars are connected to gm via the web, and a snapshot is taken.

Maybe talk to a tech there in the shop.

So, Scotty, what you are saying is cancel big brother OnStar, then tune?

I don't think OnStar has anything to do with this. The communication via the web could occur if the car was taken in for service.

I'm still on the fence about tuning my car. I also heard about "The Black Box" so to speak that keeps a record of all your flashes, etc. I really want to tune my car,but I dont want to have a major problem and be denied a warranty claim.

OnStar has nothing to do with it. When the car comes in for service, a cable is plugged into the port in the car....then info is sent to GM via the internet.

Unless the manufacturer can prove your actions/mods/abuse/neglect directly caused the breakage your warranty cannot simply be invalidated on a whim. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects you.

Ther has been numerous bulletins put out by GM to the dealerships that if the ecm/tcm programming has been changed, the powertrain warranty will be voided.

On paper...yes. In reality, no...the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act does not protect one like it probably should. You put in a new cam and add headers that voids your power train warranty. A few months later, when a power window switch shorts-out, the dealer cannot deny warranty work. However, if you have a future problem in the power train, then you have to prove that the problem is not related to or caused by the cam and headers that were installed. Technically, YOU have to prove that the actions/mods, etc. that you did had nothing to do with a particular failure.

How is tuning a bolt on car any different than adjusting a carb on a bolt on car back in the day?
