Why didn't GM make the vert a hard top vert?

I have always wanted a convertible but it would kill me to own a soft top knowing that the tops only hold up so long before you need to replace them. i would assume that a new top for something like a camaro might run upwards of 3000 bucks when the time comes to replace it. you would think that GM could have designed a hard top convertible. Volkswagen did it and it looks quite cool in motion.

Because hard top 'verts are ugly?

Seriously though, the soft top is cheaper, and it is a pretty decent match to the lines of the coupe. I've never seen a 'vert that look like a hard top, they usually look like 2 cars taken apart and reassembled wrong.

Assuming the entire top comes off, where would you store it? The current soft top takes up half of the trunk and the trunk is way too small from the start.

I don't know how the removable hard tops you're trying to compare to work.

OP I agree 100% I would gladly pay the 3k for a hard top. I love convertibles with top down. My previous car was a soft top. Will never by a soft top again.
Could not get myself to purchase the 5th gen with a soft top. Just does not look as good as the coupe with the top up.

I agree. A HUGE part of the "look" of the 5th Gen is the roof line and the soft top up kills the look for me.....I was really hoping they would offer a hard top on it.

I'm sure it probably came down to an isue of weight AND expense.

Could just also be "traditional" Camaro. The Camaro convertible has never been offered as a hard-top, so why start now? Also, like it or not, we have to face that the Camaro's biggest competitor is the Mustang.....soft top vert.

And it's not like hard top convertibles don't ever have problems. They can still eventually have leaking/alignment issues. Mechanisms can go bad on both types, but as I understand it, the weight of a hard top convertible causes those to have more problems in that area. Plus they are more expensive, and Chevrolet is trying to keep the car competitive and give it mass appeal.

Just my thoughts.

Interesting. If you watch without the audio you can miss out on the flaming dude.

My vert has a beige top and I think it's going to be a real PITA to keep clean. That stow away top on that VW is a better option but probably too many $$$ on a Camaro.

i saw an EOS up close open and close the top, i could see major appeal for it on a camaro being everyone is infatuated with the whole transformer thing. the EOS top looks almost robotic.
