"S" mode rpm

is there a problem with driving in "S" mode all the time or most of the time? Next i ask, has anyone seen that rpm sit high at times if you hit the gas briefly and when the car finally comes down you get a decent breaking effect from the transmission? I hope that made sense because i'm not sure how else to explain it.

Nothing wrong with full-time Sport Mode - that's what I usually do if I'm not on a long highway cruise (then I just put it in Drive). All Sport Mode does is raise the shift points a little so, yes, it will shift at slightly higher RPMs - but that is what it is designed to do.

If you "hit the gas" enough for the tranny to kick into a lower gear then, yes, the RPMs will "sit high", just like it will in Drive. There is a decent engine braking effect in Sport vs. Drive - at least it seems to be. Haven't actually verified the RPM difference (if any) between the two.

Bottom line: If I'm going to be driving when it goes through the gears (city type driving), I'm always in Sport Mode. Personally, I believe it gets slightly better gas mileage in Sport Mode.

Mind you, I run a Range AFM Deactivator all the time as well so AFM never figures into the picture. Things will be different w/ AFM involved.

There is no problem with driving around in S mode all of the time. Many members will only drive it in S mode.

My car was basically tuned to be in S mode all the time due to the mods I have. It is primarily a racing mode that tends to keep the RPM's at the higher level when you are flooring it because it is expecting that you are racing.

This may be totally un-related, but I broke a valve spring during one of these "Elevated RPM" incidents. Engine builder though said it was a very unusual/non-typical failure.

You don't have to be "flooring it". The actual shift points are higher (yes, based primarily on RPM) whether you are at WOT or just normal driving. Naturally though, the more you are into it, the longer it holds in each gear.

being that we're on the topic, is it normal for S mode to hold 3rd or 4th gear when doing a hard acceleration? (well harder than normal). I was pulling out into traffic but had to accelerate a little quicker. Once i got off the gas, it held 3rd gear for a while at about 4k rpm.

Not only does S mode hold the gear longer it will downshift sooner either in giving it more throttle or when going up hill in cruise control. Going down hills it will hold gear better for engine compression braking.

I assume this is the same trans behavior seen with the tow/haul mode in the pick ups?

LS does not come with a Sport Mode. Only LT and higher.

I don't think so. For one thing, doesn't tow/haul prevent you from driving in OD gear. That's how it works in my Ram. It may well change the shift points though.

I think on my 2001 GMC it was that way too, changed shift points and also kept it from going into overdrive..
