Smile houston area HPDE

so ive had a 1LE for a while, so road course stuff has always interested me but ive never actually tried it. now a friend of mine picked up a 02 z28 and has talked me into actually giving it a shot.
so im asking guys in the Houston area for a location and how to go about getting started. take a school? just find a track day that lets anyone go? try a smaller autocross event first? ive spent some time on google but id prefer to hear from you guys that have the experience in these big heavy sleds we drive.

obviously my car is not set up well for high performance driving (over sized rear tires, obnoxious cam etc) but Im fairly certain stock 1le suspension is far superior to my abilities.
I really appreciate any input from anyone willing to give a new guy on the track some pointers.
