private sale or you will get hosed. even private sale you wont get the all the mod money back. Dealerships and people that buy a couple year old used car at dealerships like warranties

When I traded my G35 the dealer asked me if there were any mods. The only mods that I did were Hotchkiss stabilizers and an axial back exhaust. It didn't seem to affect the trade value. My point is, if you are trading a performance car, dealers know to ask if there are any mods.

I'm not worried about getting money back from mods, just if the appraisal value drops from whoever is buying the car.

I own a used car lot and can tell you that I have sold a few SLP Camaros that were modded. I always drive them and have my garage guys look them over before taking them on trade. I do give extra money for mods. I have a bunch of people that want to buy a modded vehicle because they don't want to have to get it done. So don't think you won't get money out of your mods.

Maybe I should be clearer on this lol, no fault to anyone but me. I looked on KBB and it says my trade in value for what my car is is $29000. Now since I have a cam, headers, tune, etc, I was worried that if I do end up pulling the trigger and going through with this, if I would see a huge drop in that price or not (just going off by what KBB says and not an actual price, although dealers around me often go off KBB for trade ins).

Buying a used car with mods would only reduce the used car price if I was shopping for a used auto. Would not know quality of mods. Would pay more for a used car that is factory stock.

dealers don't go by KBB, they go by auction pricing, which is usually 18%-25% below what KBB might say.

if KBB says $29K expect the dealer to offer you $25K and if you have motor mods maybe lower.

so in a word, YES you will get hosed.

I think it depends on the mods. CAI or an exhaust (maybe not a complete exhaust change) would probably be ok for most people. Anything else would probably make most people think about it twice.
Also, you could go check the Sales section on this forum and you'll see how many members usually end up selling their cars for less than what they were expecting. That is if they don't end up putting the stock parts back.

Your talking about an axle back muffler vs alot of work like cams etc.
Op needs to put the car back to stock.
Then sell parts, that's just how it goes when you mod.

A friend is trying to sell a g37 with twin turbos for 18k.
No one wants it, told him remove the twins & trade it in.
He paid around 9k for the tt kit & install.

That person needs to get back to work and stay off the internet!

That's a heck of a deal on the Vette. Is that from the same dealer you are trading in to?

Yes. I contacted them as well and spoke to the used car sales manager and he said that they would accept my car with the engine mods. He said he would have to check the car out, etc etc before letting them appraise it, but doesn't see why I would get less out of it because of the mods. He said he'd be happy to put it on his lot and that's great news.
