I think one of the first things a thief will do is disable Onstar. It's not foolproof.

Yes because Onstar knows where the vehicle is at all times whether enabled or not. When I test drove the ZL1 I pressed the Onstar button and told them I was on a test drive and asked them to try their directions and connections package and they asked no questions and promptly sent directions to the vehicle. All the dealer has to do is call Onstar who will in turn call the police before locating the vehicle. Onstar will not locate or disable a vehicle for a customer only the police.

That is my same thinking. If they are bold enough to go into the showroom then they must have the know how to disable onstar.

Don't rip on OnStar. There's probably a good reason they got away: they knew what they were doing! If they were stealing a ZL1, they probably considered that OnStar would be present and pulled the appropriate fuses or cut the appropriate wires.

Disconnect the battery = No Onstar. The car is probably already disassembled.

the dealer would not have those accounts active until the car is sold.

I'm not so sure...

I have never pressed the OnStar button. And yet when I was driving last summer (about 2 months after the sale) an announcement came on telling me to activate it. I did not. Then the calls to the house started. I told them to delete me and my car out of their system. And they told me that they could not do it.

Granted the dealer would have passed my info to OnStar. When I complained to him about all the calls, he said I needed to activate it.

Just wait till someday you get in a wreck, and the lawyers ask on star for your records, and they find you where speeding, ur screwed, believe me, it could happen. Like has been said here, if you push the button, they answer, it's on always, now I don't pay for the damn thing, and if I have an emergency and they refuse to call 911, they would be liable.

Do you really think onstar records driving habits of every gm vehicle on the road? There's a black box in your car that does that.

Here's more info about the car. I'm sure someone will ask what the VIN/SEQ# is.

They cannot tell when you're speeding. This sort of thing breeds unneccesary paranoia.

All they need to do is get it under a roof or awning (in a trailer) and onstar will not work. Tried to have onstar unlock my previous Tahoe at a gas station and they could not do it because of the awning over the pumps.

How true that is. You can take a heavy steel cup and place it over the antenna and no signal sent or received. What we fail to understand is some people do this for a living ( Thieves ) and they will find a way to take anything you have and never get caught. Prisons are for the stupid criminals or the unlucky ones.

With that type of info, I'd make a seperate thread and post the VIN then let it spread like wildfire...

Same issue with the recked ZL1 VIN#804
