Showin off gone bad.
I have not driven my Camaro SS in almost 2 weeks but it was really nice today so I decided to go for a ride. I drove through a local park and there was a guy waxing his Mustang GT so I stopped to talk to him. The guys name was Eric and we were checking out each others cars. He loves the new Camaro's and wished he would have waited and got a Camaro instead of a Mustang. Anyway we get this great idea to do a side by side burn out in the parking lot. There were about 20 people standing around and they egged us on so we go to the far end of the parking lot, get set up side by side. I turn off the traction control, look over to Eric and together we hit the gas. For the first few seconds things were going great, everyone around us was screaming and there was a huge cloud of smoke behind us.
All of a sudden the Mustang's rear end starts drifting towards me and I reacted by turning the wheel to the left. Big mistake....the rear end of my Camaro drifts to the right and we are now just inches apart. I let off of the gas and the tires hook up and shoots me to the left. I turn the wheel back to the right and end up doing a 360 and run hard into a parking stop. I look over at Eric just as he hits the concrete parking stop and proceeds up into the grass and runs into a tree!! I get out right away and run over to him and right away I could smell anti freeze and steam is coming out of the front of his Mustang. What started out as showing off and having a little fun has now turned into an ugly scene. Eric ended up having to call a tow truck to have his Mustang towed. He has a ground effects kit which was all busted up, radiator leaking, grill broken....looks like at least $2K in damage to his car. I go over to check my car, no visible damage. As I drive home I left the radio off to see if I could hear anything, all appears to be fine to my car. I'm to old for this kind of stupidity but when I get into my Camaro I transform into a moron I guess. Russ |

Well, as bad as it was, it could have been worse!

I'm thinking half the folks here would have probably attempted the same burnout scene.
Glad no one got hurt. Don O

Lesson Learned? Thanks for the story. Maybe others will read what not to do. Could have been worse or someone could have ended up hurt or worse.

Have to know how to control the burnout and cut power to your rear wheels if need be.

The one good thing about having the less powerful LLT engine, is that my car doesn't drift sideways during a burnout lol.. Glad ya'll are ok and the Camaro!

you never know how good a driver the guy next to you is, it's one reason in a list of many why street racing is not a good idea. Although this wasn't racing lots of things can go wrong during a burnout, especially with 2 high performance cars next to eachother. Fortunately he only hit a tree and not some family walking the dog in the park. Hopefully lessons learned all around.

Sounds like a lot more damage to me than 2k.
If you can smell rad fluid, that is expensive. |
