More Than 8 Quarts?

Changed oil and was very careful to see that all of the 8 quarts went in. Even so, the oil reads at the lower dot on the dipstick...what's up with that?

I changed the oil today! Added 7 qts, started the car up for about 5 min, let sit 30 min! Checked it added the other qt! Now reads fine!

But have heard of this issue from others!

I bet it takes a while to drain from the oil cooler and maybe you have to run it to get it back in the oil cooler.

...possibly some difference between draining the oil temperature wise and how it is peformed. While the engine is warm, remove the filter first, then drain the engine oil. This will result in a more positive flow.

You've got to let these cars sit a while and then check.

If you went over 8 qts that's too much.

Same for me. Not sure why it happens. If the engine is hot, its at the bottom dot...
hey that rhymes...

Dipstick was in properly. Read the same after long drive and sitting for a couple of hours. Had same issue with the first oil change and added just under 1/2 quart. Will do the same again.

Drain times very as per the person doing the job.Operating motor temp is a must. Cold motor and hour long drain time is not proper.Manufactures recommend capacities by this guideline...My opinion is to first start by draining the oil. While draining replace the oil filter. When reinstalled oil will be down to a small stream. Aproxx 4mins of drain time. Replace the drain plug. Install the recommended amount of oil. Start the vehicle and run for 20 to 30 sec. Check oil within 30 sec after shutdown. Add if needed. Repeat the run procedure again and recheck. Double check the plug and filter and your done! Everyone has an opinions but mine is a warranty approved one. I own a new car warranty approved lube shop and have been at it for 23 years. This procedure was on my certification exam over 20 years ago. It still has not changed. I've done a few hundred thousand oil changes and take pride in what I do. Hope my opinion helps a bit. On going argument but I go with the warranty approved one.

If you drip it dry you will find that you will need to add more than the capacity stated in the owners manual. Capacities are recommended by a normal drain time. If you have the time you can drip it dry but expect to reinstall more than the recommended capacity. It's ok to do so. Again operating temp is the key!
