who has needed a major repair on a gen5?
I wanted to start a thread to keep track of who has needed some type of major repair now that these cars are getting some age and are out of warranty.
If you have needed some type major repair (i guess anything other then maintenance issues) please post year, engine size, mods, miles what was replaced and how much it cost you. Also post an honest assessment of your driving style and what you were doing when the part broke (if you blow your rear end but are launching from every red light please post it, if you blow your motor but are boosted or redlining every shift please post it....etc) Im hoping to get a used ss next year, at first the wife was on board with it because she got the car she wanted this year, but she is the type who thrash talk american cars and camaros because she is a lexus fan. So hopefully enough people post here that i can show her the cars are not "rolling money pits" as she described them. |

Op your wife has an opinion and nothing more. There will always be issues posted on the internet about any car. the 5th Gen is a well built and fun driving car. Go get your Camaro and stop listening to your wife lol.
Edit: Tires you are going to need lots of tires with an SS!!! Thats a good thing! Cam |

+That's why you don't have to buy cars in pairs, so the two of you can drive two different types of cars.

Me. Didnt know it was a rental car before i bought it(dumb of me not to check I was too excited) and it randomly spun a bearing as it was missing like 4 quarts of oil. I check the oil every 4 or 5 days, at least every fill up or 500-1k miles miles. GM sent a tech down trying to accuse me of my CAI and exhaust(no headers at the time) were the cause of it. Knowing of the Magnusun-Moss Law, I simply said: Prove it.... They couldnt and I got a brand new long block. Car has 55k miles on it, engine only 15. Sucked at first, But now my car feels like a factory freak. Way faster than my buddies V6 with similar mods. Ive yet to dyno or drag it.

I find people who purchase Japanese cars are completely inept at any kind of mechanical repair, no matter how small or trivial. Tell your wife to enjoy the $25,000 leather seat option on her Toyota Avalon.

My mom has owned two 5th gens since they were released, and have had zero problems out of her 2010 and her 2014
One of the other reasons I felt comfortable dropping the money on a slightly used 2012 SS. I beat on mine a little more than hers, but I'm also going to end up a little more anal over maintenance than her too so it works out. Also, my girlfriend loves my Camaro and she grew up with a dad who liked Fords. So maybe it's just your wife |

They are "rolling money pits" lol I haven't seen or bought one yet that's not.
Find me a car that needs no cash to keep it on the road.

2011 lt2 rs a6...had the intermediary steering column become unseated and had it replaced under extended warranty at 51k miles. Nothing in particular made it break and take the car out of commission. I believe it's the pot holes and wash boarding where I live...even though I creep down our dirt roads.
Your wife got her car so she should support you buying yours....what ever that may be. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Be happy and have an awesome car to drive My husband learned that the hard way |
