Fried wiring harness?
Ok, about 8 or so months ago the car started kicking out random codes and i found the main harness that runs down the 2,4,6,8 passenger side of the motor. The harness was laying on the header tube and had some burned wires and the wrap was burned thru. I did my best to re electrical tape the wires that were exposed and re wrapped the harness and zipped it out of the way.
Well driving home friday in 110 deg heat, i got on it with min boost, 6psi, (CO2 bottle off). I wasn't even boost and in 3rd at about 5000rpm car fell on its face and quit and eng lite was on, P0010 and P080c codes. Codes were camshaft position actuator solenoid circuit andUpshift / Skip Shift Solenoid Control Circuit Low were the codes. I coasted the car off the main road and tried to start and noticed with key on the fuel pressure indicated less than 10psi (Squash return system). Car fired up for a bout a second then died, cleared codes and did it again. fired right up then died. After about 5 attempts the fuel pressure was now at 0 and no noise from the pump at all. I cut open the wiring harness and noticed about 4-7 wires fused together. The pic is after separating them. So calling the experts. I imagine my ECU may be dead. I dont get any codes anymore when trying to start and it wont even fire at all...duh, no fuel. Main concern is the large diameter black wire was the one with lots of burned plastic on it. Also kind of weird that it connects with a thinner beige wire with the black stripe. Also you can see a number of pretty scorched exposed wires.

make repairs to the wires as needed, at minimum rewrap the wires. if they were burned bad enough may need to replace at least that section of wire. check all related fuses and hope it was just a fuse that popped before the ecu or anything else was damaged

Hardly an expert, yet if you can clear your codes, I am assuming you're able to communicate with your PCM.....In that case, I would suspect it to be fine. You may want to open your harness up a little more to see if more wires are exposed.

I'm pretty sure the tan/black wire is the High Speed GMLAN Serial Data Bus +
that goes to the ECM X1 73 Pin connector. Not that that really helps. I'll look at my harness tomorrow when I'm home and see if mine has the black piece in the middle of it. Any chance the black piece is a piece of heat shrink from a former repair? |

Definitely got a problem there! I'd cut out all the burned, scorched wiring and replace it. As to the tan/black wire and black wire, it could be a fusible link. It's hard to tell from the picture. In any case, separate all the wires, insulate each wire, then re-wrap the bundle......and keep away from heat sources LOL!

Thanks for the replies. My main concern is why the 0 fuel pressure and no sound at all from the pump. I havent gotten around to checking fuses etc its been too damn hot here in Tx lately.

After seeing that birdsnest I wouldn't be surprised to find more than one fuse spent. Can you put power to the pumps, with something like a power probe, and see if they will pump manually?

Popped a P080C today and was locked out of 2-3 continuously. CAGS has been disabled in my tune for 3 years.Checking harnesses now. Bull, what else did you find?
Edit.... Found main harness on front by #2 going down melted by header. Must have been too close since I had the engine swapped last winter. Tried to get a pic but no joy. Barely melted the wires and CAGS wire must have grounded at the header. This thread sure helped me find it though. Glad I caught it before a disaster happened.

Seals were leaking in the rear end so GForce sent out new seals/bearing for free. Installed Outlaw 1500hp axles in place of the 1000hp set Installed an AIS 4 gal Meth tank and new Alky meth pump (was leaking). The AIS tank is very nice compared to the tank Julio sent me with the meth kit. installed an Improved Racing low profile oil cooler thermostat. Running without a thermostat was a pain during the winter.

Mine had ~5-6 wires insulation fused together from the heat laying up against the header. Only one that melted through the insulation was the CAGS ground. All repaired now.

How did you repair your wires?
I was thinking of cutting out sections and using but connectors. Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk |

I would recommend to solder and heat shink wrap all connections

I know this is an old thread but wanted to say thanks for sharing this Bull. I experienced the same thing yesterday with check engine light and a bunch of codes. Found my harness touching the header and it had melted through. I am in the process of unwrapping the tape that is glued to the wires and pulling the melted wires apart. What a pain. So far, I've found 6 wires that need repair and one blown fuse. I hope to get this done in the next week or so. I am afraid that the damage to the harness may have gone further than I can easily access and if this doesn't work, I might look into replacing the whole harness... what a mess
