Oil...

How long does it take to burn off if spilt onto exhaust manifolds or something during oil change? Also, where should the oil line be on the dipstick for LS3? Mines way above the cross hatch marks when cold. I'm worried the dealer overfilled it.

Many thanks,

Steve

When you start the engine and the exhaust manifolds get to temperature, the oil would have burnt off.

Anywhere on the cross hatch is fine. Remember, oil expands when it gets hot. It sounds like you need to remove some oil to get the level down.

I like to add oil when it gets to the very bottom of the hatch mark, 1 full quart.

Good luck
Dimitri

The cross hatch area is one qt. So use that as a guide of how over it is. An inch above is way over, make them fix it.

The problem of overfill by many oil change places is caused by the way they check it. They dial in the amount into their bulk oil gun. The gun shuts off automatically at x qts. Then they start the engine, shut it off and check the oil 10 seconds later. And it shows low, so they thrown another qt in. Seen that happen a gazzilion times.

What they really need to do is wait 15 minutes for that cold oil to drain down. Then check it. Or just trust the gun Qt setting and qty that engine should take. If it's in the middle of the cross hatch after a short shut off, it will be near the top after 15 mins of sitting there. Most quickee places won't want to wait that long. So they should just trust the amount they are putting in, and go by the middle of the cross hatch if checking it 10 seconds after shutting the engine off. Cold oil takes a long time to drain down.

What also happens at the quickie places is they don't let all of the oil drain out, again it takes awhile and when they add 6 or 8 qts it still has up to 1 quart still in it that has not drained down. Happened to me at a dealer twice.
