Autonomous driving is coming. GM has been working on it for years. So long infact that the Buick LeSabre was one of the test cars.
Also, the DARPA challenges are aimed strictly at having not only a drive a path, but make decision on obstacles etc. I think they have gone from being in the desert to actually running the last test in the city. GM has been a sponsor for the Carnegie-Mellon entry that won the challenge a few years ago. http://www.popularmechanics.com/tech...adgets/4229973 Not sure I'm ready to have my car park itself, let alone get in a car and let IT drive me somewhere. But with GPS being so accurate now, I guess anything is possible.

Its only cloning a pre-planned route. The real innovation is when the car itself will be able to think and adapt to the situation in front of it and drive at that speed.

About 70% of the people on the road would be better off if the car did the driving. Check out Googles car, it drives itself, and the only accidents it's had has been from other people hitting it.

I believe I would rather have cars drive for certain people. I believe google is working on something similar as well.
