--Brand new iPod Nano doesn't work out of the box! Any tips?--

I just bought a new iPod nano today and when I got home I hooked it up to my computer to sync it, it gives me this "awesome" message:

An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly.
Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod and then try again.

What the hell! I've disconnected/reconnected over and over, and oooover some more. I've Googled this problem and found tons of other people having this same problem in the last few years, but I couldn't find a good solution.

I'm just pretty frustrated that this thing is not working right out of the box. This is my first bad apple experience so I'm stuck. Any help would be better than where I'm sitting now.

Thanks.

If no CD came with it, use 'My Computer' and open it up and install the software that
should be stored in the unit. No Instruction Booklet?

Is it fully charged?

Restarted the computer?

Do a hard reset of the iPod?

I'd take it back and get a non-apple product.

Also it could be that your computer is trying to recognize it as a previous used iPod? Maybe clear the other one completely and start over?

I've shut the computer down, tried a different cable, and hard reset aswell. I might exchange it for another one tomorrow and see if it does any different.
