Driver versus Passenger Air Conditioning Temps

After resolving the oil pump issue with my ZL1,

it's on to less pressing issues. I have noticed that the air temperature from the driver and passenger dashboard and console vents is dramatically different, even with the two zones synced, to the point where the car struggles to maintain a comfortable temperate when it's hot outside. Here's the data I collected using an Etekcity model 630 infrared thermometer, aimed at the back of the console vents (the ones directly forward of the gear shift). All temps are degrees F. Car was parked in the shade. I let it run long enough to warm the engine and get the AC temp readings to stabilize. Windows were open.

Ambient temperate (as reported by the car): 86
AC settings: full auto, driver and passenger zones synced.

Set Temp Driver Passenger Delta
------------ -------- ------------- -------
LO 33.8 33.2 -0.6
63 45.3 71.7 +26.4
66 50.7 75.5 +24.8
69 53.0 77.0 +24.0
72 57.3 80.7 +23.4
75 62.7 93.5 +30.8
78 68.0 94.1 +26.1
81 71.2 93.0 +21.8
84 76.1 93.3 +17.2
HI 142.7 161.6 +18.9

The driver's side does more or less what I would expect, but the passenger side runs way too hot. Anyone else observed this? I suspect the passenger zone ambient air temperature sensor is faulty. When you set it to LO, which I presume means the software will ignore the sensor reading, the two zones are about the same. For everything else, the passenger zone runs about 20 degrees too hot. I was surprised by the HI setting. I would have thought the two zones to be the same. 161 degrees seems really hot- that's getting close to burn temperature.

Thanks all.

Yes. I've been fighting with this same issue lately. The first time we noticed it, the passenger side was blowing warm feeling are while the driver side was blowing cool air.....not as cold as usual....and the car wouldn't stay cool enough to stay comfortable in this hot part of summer we're in right now. Within a few days, maybe a week, the driver side eventually stopped blowing cool air, so I knew I had a leak. The dealer finds that the aluminum line that has the test/fill ports is leaking around the welded seams of the ports, replaces the line, and recharges. Everything is back to normal.

Then not even a month later, it starts doing it again, although not as bad. I go ahead and call the dealer, suspecting there is still a leak somewhere, and I want to find it and fix it before it completely stops working again. The dealer can't find any leaks and even says they can't duplicate the problem, which I can't believe, because it had been doing it everytime I drove it. They do some sort of actuator recalibration they called it, and that seemed to fix it. I really wanted it straightened out before Camarofest, because I knew it was going to be another hot one. It's only been about 5 or 6 days, as I picked it up from the dealer this past Tuesday, but hopefully it will keep doing what it should.

Another thing I noticed one day. I think it was after this last dealer visit too. My son was riding in the passenger side and closed the vent by the door because he was getting cold. Shortly after doing that I felt the middle vent on his side stop blowing cold air, even though the temp was set on the same as mine. I told him to open the vent back up and just point it away from him because I wanted to see if that was having an effect on the air temp, and for whatever reason, the passenger side started blowing the same temp air as the driver side, so it must have something to do with it.

I've decided I'll have the dealer do a warranty repair on this when I take it in for my last free oil change- probably early fall. It doesn't bother me enough to take it in now and do without the car for however long it takes. I just hope they don't have to tear the whole dash apart to replace the sensor. For now I'll just close the passenger vents and its fine.

It's a faulty temp sensor on the inaccurate side
