Well, it has less mechanical stress than the adhesive that holds hidden weights on the inside surface of wheels, but more heat stress. There are plenty of heat-resistant adhesives.

OK, total W.A.G. here. Maybe they are there to aid in initial wheel installation. So if the wheel doesn't go on straight it'll hit the lead weights and since lead is softer than aluminum it won't scuff the wheel and the wheel won't scuff the finish on the caliper. Maybe the dealers (or a Q.C. team at the factory) are supposed to remove the weights, but the info. never got out?
Generally the adhesive on wheel weights won't survive high temps (generally far lower than the lead itself) so they will remove themselves after significant hard use. Unless they aren't just wheel weights, but something specific. My other thought was that they were like "zincs" similar to what is used on a powerboat outdrive to draw corrosion away from important parts. |

true but the hottest a tire will get is around 300 or so i believe and thats only for a few seconds when your smokin the tires then the cool off quite quickly, so with the spokes of the wheel spining through the air cooling the wheel theres no way a wheel can get nearly as hot as the brakes. if im wrong please take it easy on me lol

The Brembos on my Evo squeal occasionally too... nature of the beast. At least I know how to fix it now.

Is this on a car that will be getting 21" wheels? I wonder if the factory stashes extra wheel weights on the calipers for orders that will get dealer installed 21" wheels? I would think that the 21" wheels should be balanced prior to shipment, but who knows. If that's the case, they should peel off the caliper very easily.

That is the ABL feature on the car.
Ambient Brake Lead. -OR- Maybe the mole and his friends spent to many hours on this forum and forgot to balance the wheels and tires and put the weights on.... |
